The NBL1 North’s Sunshine Coast Phoenix held their inaugural Heritage Round game at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium, celebrating the rich basketball history in the area and hosting a preview of the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 National Finals.
The third annual National Finals will be held on the spectacular Sunshine Coast, the Host Region and Official Destination Partner for the Event.
In retro attire celebrating Caloundra basketball in the 1990s, the men’s team captured a dominant win, Taking Townsville down 91-65 off the back of 22 points and 20 rebounds from Nelson Kahler.
“I was just like the little kids here coming to watch games, it is just so sick to be here. And that’s why I still play,” Kahler told 7 News Sunshine Coast.
“Credit to my teammates, they make it so easy for me. We’ve got such talented guys and awesome local talent.”
While the women’s team didn’t have the same luck, falling to the now 8-2 Townsville Flames, the stadium was packed for both games, showing the excitement around basketball on the Sunshine Coast.
