The Gems have gone back-to-back in the 2024 FIBA Women’s U18 Asia Cup, taking down the host nation in China last night 96-79.
Headlined by Townsville Flames star Saffron Shiels, the 18-year-old scored 31 points with 15 rebounds and six assists to claim the first-place finish.
Centre of Excellence star Monique Bonbongie added 23 points and seven rebounds – showing major promise against one of the world’s best women’s programs.
Shiels was named to the tournament All-Star Five, alongside fellow Australian and former CoE product Lara Somfai.
Despite going up against 7’3” Zhang Ziyu, who scored an outrageous 42 points, the Gems maintained the lead for most of the game with their immense depth.
