Jason Kelly's journey as a basketball referee began in 1988 at Werribee, fuelled by a little competitive fire. At just 14 years old, after a tough loss, he told his mother, a former netball umpire, that he could do a better job than the referees officiating his game. Little did he know, this moment of frustration would spark a remarkable career.
Jason’s dedication to officiating quickly blossomed. He debuted in the VBL in 1996, working a hefty 27 games in his first season. Over the next 28 years, he has amassed a staggering total of over 1000 games across various representative levels, including the prestigious NBL and WNBL, as well as SEABL (now NBL1), Big V, and VBL.
His influence extends beyond the regular winter seasons. Jason made his WNBL debut in 2006, has officiated in numerous Grand Finals series, and was inducted as a WNBL Life Member in 2019. The 2022/23 season saw him reach another milestone - his 250th WNBL game, solidifying his position as the league's all-time games record holder.
Jason’s achievements aren't limited to the national stage. Throughout his Victorian career, he has refereed a remarkable 5 SEABL grand finals and was deservedly named SEABL Male Referee of the Year in 2013. On Sunday 28th at Keilor, Jason will take the court for his 500th SEABL/NBL1 game, becoming only the third person to achieve this incredible milestone.
Reflecting on his upcoming 500th game, Kelly expressed, "I'm very humbled to be part of the league for so long." When asked if he'll approach this milestone differently, he calmly replied, "I will be nervous just like every other game and do the same routine." He admitted "I never thought I would reach this many games."
Jason Kelly's story is a testament to dedication, passion, and a commitment to excellence on the court. His contribution to the sport is recognized by many, including Ron Clarke and David Bartlett, who identified his talent early on and mentored him throughout his career.
Congratulations, Jason.
