NBL1 East will make history this season as they launch the Freeway Series between the Illawarra Hawks and Sutherland Sharks.
The teams will go head-to-head in the men’s and women’s competitions in a best of four series, with the winners lifting the cup at the end of the season.
The men’s and women’s teams will each play two games in the series and the club winner will be decided from the best of four games between both competitions.
Illawarra Hawks’ star Harry Morris spoke on the exciting new launch, emphasising the growth of the NBL1 East conference.
“I’ve been playing with Illawarra for a long time now and we’ve never had anything like this before,” Morris said on WIN News Illawarra.
The first of four Freeway Series games will be held on ANZAC Day, a special day for both communities to support the launch and remember those who served our country.
Rebecca Abel from the Hawks’ women’s team assured the squad will be ready to fight for the cup, revealing new players that will be rolling into the team in the coming weeks.
“We’re quite a young team, we’re competing hard. We’re just needing some extra players which looks like we’ll be getting here soon which is very exciting for us,” she said.
Abel’s rival, Sutherland Shark Aliza Fabbro expressed her confidence on behalf of the Sharks ahead of their first game.
"Plenty of rivalry, but I'm very confident going into these couple of games," Fabbro said.
