In a stunning move, Opal Alice Kunek has signed with the Casey Cavaliers for the 2024 NBL1 South season.
Last season with Nunawading, Kunek averaged 21 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 17 games for the Spectres.
The Spectres failed to make the Finals, finishing with a 9-13 record with a 12th-placed finish in the NBL1 South last season.
While suffering a wrist injury in December, Kunek has still managed to play in nine games for the WNBL’s Townsville Fire. She’s averaged 11 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists for the second on the ladder team.
Kunek said she is excited to reunite with head coach Alex Palazoolo.
“The club has been so professional and I’m excited to keep helping strengthen their junior programs and give back to the basketball community,” she told NBL Media.
“I have known Alex for a long time and always loved the way he coaches and have a lot of respect for him. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop my game, improve and help this group make the playoffs.
While Palazoolo added,
“Having Alice join the Casey Cavs for the upcoming NBL1 season is a huge coup for our club,” they said.
“Alice is an amazing human being and brings a wealth of WNBL and International experience and combining this with her leadership, high basketball IQ, physicality, scoring prowess and ability to defend multiple positions will ensure our team is well-placed to contend in 2024.
“I know Alice will set the standard for our group and that her teammates will benefit from having her play alongside them. We can’t wait for Alice to join the Casey Cavs at the completion of her WNBL commitments and our supporters should be excited with the team we’ve put together for the season ahead”.
