Basketball Western Australia has announced that the Mitsubishi Motors NBL1 West Grand Finals will be hosted at RAC Arena, home of the Perth Wildcats, on the 10th of August in a double-header spectacle.
After two sell-out crowds in the deciding games of last season at Bendat Basketball Centre, the NBL1 West will take the Grand Final to RAC Arena to celebrate the growth of basketball out West, in one of Australia’s standout entertainment venues.
“Taking the NBL1 West Grand Finals to a world-class venue like RAC Arena has been a long-term vision for the league,” Adam Bowler, GM of Basketball Operations at BWA said.
“Fortunately, due to the incredible support from the WA basketball community – selling out Bendat Basketball Centre for both the women’s and men’s finals for several years - this exciting expansion is now achievable in 2024.
“We are excited to continue to grow and celebrate basketball in our community and look forward to breaking records and making history at RAC Arena in 2024.”
CEO of Basketball WA Nathan Cave explained that this move will not only elevate the competition, but the quality and interest of basketball in the state.
“Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sport in the country, and here in WA, it trails the AFL by only (almost) two per cent for junior participation,” he said.
“Basketball WA and our Board are committed to our purpose, to grow and develop the game of basketball. More fans will be able to watch these Grand Finals in person than ever before, and in terms of venue, RAC Arena stands as basketball's equivalent of Optus Stadium.
“This is where WA will set ourselves apart from the other NBL1 conferences. No other state in the NBL1 competition has played NBL1 games in a bigger venue like RAC Arena, and we could well end up holding the record in Australia for the biggest crowd ever at an NBL1 event. This milestone is poised to propel Western Australian basketball to even greater heights, underscoring the significance of showcasing both the women's and men's games on the biggest stage.”
Tickets will be on sale soon.
