East Perth Eagles (82) defeated Mandurah Magic (67)
It took until overtime but with Mary Baskerville a dominant force, the East Perth Eagles opened their account for 2024 with the 82-67 home win against the Mandurah Magic.
The Eagles were back home at Peter Campbell Basketball Arena still hunting a first win of the season hosting a Magic team also looking to put an end to a three-game losing slide.
That raised the stakes for the contest and it would turn out to be quite the eventful affair.
Through the entire first 40 minutes precious little separated the two teams with no more than six points ever being the margin with the Magic narrowly leading 22-21 at the end of one.
Scores were level at 36-36 by half-time and scores remained deadlocked at three quarter-time, and at the end of regulation.
Mandurah did go up four early in the last term and then the lead was out to six thanks to Emma Klasztorny with five minutes to play.
Mary Baskerville was able to bring the Eagles back within four before Bri Bailey knocked down a three-pointer to make it a one-point game and Mary Goulding's free-throws tied scores up with two minutes on the clock.
A Sarah Allen three-point play had East Perth up one with less than a minute to play and Baskerville hit two free-throws to make the margin three, but in the end the game went to overtime thanks to the remarkable games record holder Casey Mihovilovich hitting a huge three for Mandurah.
Then in the extra period it was all the Eagles as they outscored the Magic 18 points to three in a remarkably dominant five-minute stretch to open their winning account in style, and win a first game since May 26 last year.
Mary Baskerville played like a woman possessed in the win for East Perth finishing with 34 points, 20 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks on 13/15 shooting.
Mary Goulding added 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Tessa Morrison eight points, seven assists and three steals.
The Magic are now 2-6 following the loss despite 27 points from Casey Mihovilovich in the 561st game of her career to go with seven rebounds and three assists while hitting 6/10 from downtown.
Rachel Halleen added nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, Emma Klasztorny nine points and eight boards, and Bree Mullenax nine points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
The Eagles have the bye next weekend before taking on the Cockburn Cougars at home on Friday May 17 while the Magic head to Kalgoorlie to play the Goldfields Giants next Saturday.

Both teams had opened the round on Friday night with the Slammers losing away to the Cockburn Cougars by 85 points while the Hawks lost to the Warwick Senators by 28 points at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Willetton Tigers (86) defeated Cockburn Cougars (63)
The Willetton Tigers are warming into the season nicely and earned a measure of revenge on the Cockburn Cougars with an 86-63 victory.
It was a 2023 Grand Final rematch between the Tigers and Cougars at Willetton Basketball Stadium with Willetton coming into the contest having won its last two games, and welcoming new import Jillian Archer into the line-up.
Cockburn had won five of six games so far this season in its championship defence, but the Cougars just couldn’t hit a shot from outside on Saturday evening and that would prove the ultimate difference.
Incredibly Cockburn missed its first 28 three-point attempts before Regan Turnour-McCarty broke the drought in the third quarter, but the damage had been done by that point with Willetton opening up a match-winning advantage.
Despite the Cougars not being able to make a shot from beyond the arc, they did stay in the contest in the first half and were even leading 19-17 at quarter-time, and 35-34 at half-time.
That was remarkable in its own right but Willetton got rolling in the third quarter and ended up outscoring Cockburn 28 points to six to open up a 21-point lead on the back of scoring 14 consecutive points.
The Tigers went on with the job from there with the lead growing to 32 points in the final term before the home team went on to win by 23 and improve to a 6-3 record with three consecutive wins as a result.
Melisa Brcaninovic once again produced a standout performance for Willetton with 29 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and two steals on 9/17 shooting from the floor, 3/6 from downtown and 8/8 at the foul line.
New import Jillian Archer was mighty impressive too with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Claire Jacobs chimed in with another 16 points and two assists while captain Desiree Kelley contributed seven points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Cockburn ended up shooting 3/34 from downtown after missing their first 28 attempts with Steph Gorman, Jewel Williams and Regan Turnour-McCarty combining to go 3/26.
Gorman finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals with Williams adding 11 points and nine assists, and Jessie Edwards 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in the 199th game of her career.
Willetton is on the road next Saturday to the Lakeside Lightning while Cockburn has another double-header weekend starting at home to the Perth Redbacks on Friday and then away to the Warwick Senators.

Goldfields Giants (61) lost to Perth Redbacks (82)
Even without Anneli Maley, the Perth Redbacks were able to keep building some momentum this season with the 82-61 win in Kalgoorlie over the Goldfields Giants.
After losing the first three games of the season, the Redbacks had won three of the last five including last Sunday at home to the Giants by 39 points ahead of the trip to Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium.
Goldfields was looking for a second win of the season and started well on their home floor to lead 21-18 by quarter-time, but once the Redbacks worked on top they never looked back even without Maley who is with the Australian 3x3 team.
Perth held a narrow 39-35 lead at half-time but then the Redbacks took control with 21 points to seven in the third quarter to open up a 20-point advantage, which grew to 23 and they would end up winning by 21.
The win improves the Redbacks to a 4-5 record on the season with consecutive wins for the first time with all five starters scoring in double-figures led by Brooke Malone with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Natalie Chou also added 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals with Shenae Hartree contributing 13 points, five boards, three steals and two blocks, Mikayla Pirini 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, and Raya Thompson 11 points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds.
The Giants slip to a 1-5 record with the defeat despite Anne Zipser delivering 16 points and 21 rebounds.
Lauren Fech also had 13 points, nine boards, three assists and two steals, and Jhazmin Joson 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Rockingham Flames (93) defeated Joondalup Wolves (63)
The Rockingham Flames are the last unbeaten team left in the NBL1 West women's competition after a dominant home performance to beat the Joondalup Wolves 93-63.
Not only were the two undefeated teams locking horns at Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Saturday night, but there was the added intrigue with a host of players and coaches up against their former teams.
Shani Amos played 270 games, won two championships and was a long-term captain at the Wolves but has joined the Flames this year.
She came up against her former team for the first time alongside teammate and assistant coach Ellyce Ironmonger, head coach Marcus Wong, and star forward Nes'eya Parker-Williams.
Both teams have been outstanding so far this season and both also still have a key player to welcome into their line-ups as they put their undefeated records on the line.
However, right from the outset and Rockingham was in control of the contest with their defensive pressure led by two-time Best Defensive Player Emma Gandini the major difference.
The Flames opened up a 26-12 advantage by quarter-time and went on with the job from there including leading 44-32 at half-time.
Rockingham pulled away further in the second half to end up leading by 25 points in the third period, and 30 in the fourth on the way to the eventual 30-point victory.
That leaves the Flames the last undefeated team in the competition at 8-0 while Joondalup suffers its first loss to be 5-1.
Emma Gandini produced a phenomenal all-round performance for Rockingham finishing up tantalisingly close to a quadruple double with 22 points, nine assists, nine steals and eight rebounds.
Georgia Pineau was a strong inside presence too with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists with Nes'eya Parker-Williams thriving against her former team with 17 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Jess Jakens also had 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals, Opal Mader seven points, Sophie Doran six points, six boards and four assists, and Shani Amos five points, three steals and two rebounds.

Warwick Senators (87) lost to Geraldton Buccaneers (96)
The defending champion Geraldton Buccaneers kept their undefeated start to the season going with former league MVP Josh Braun coming up huge in the 96-87 win over the Warwick Senators.
The Buccs were starting their road double weekend against the Senators at Warwick Stadium with Warwick fresh off a 24-point win the night before against the Perry Lakes Hawks and a 46-point thumping of the Perth Redbacks last week.
Perth Wildcats guard Michael Harris had 10 threes the night before and 42 points for the Senators, but he was in foul trouble early on Saturday night to take him out of the contest, and the Buccs would open up a nine-point lead in the second term.
Geraldton would still be leading 44-39 by half-time but the Senators did work back on top midway through the fourth quarter.
Cody Ellis made seven triples the night before and hit another with just over four minutes to play to put Warwick up one before Brody England extended the lead with a finish off a Buccs turnover.
Geraldton responded with a triple to Ryan Blanchett to level scores once more and the Buccs would end up scoring the last 12 points of the contest.
After the Senators went up 87-84, the Buccaneers took charge starting with that Blanchett triple before an and-one from Joshua Keyes, another couple of free-throws to Keyes, a bucket to Liam Hunt and then two more closing free-throws from Nik DeSantis.
Geraldton improves to 6-0 on the season with the win with 2019 league MVP Josh Braun delivering his best performance since returning this year and joining the Buccs with 28 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

East Perth Eagles (102) defeated Mandurah Magic (100)
The East Perth Eagles continue to be involved in some thrilling finishes and this time they came out on the winning side with the 102-100 win over the Mandurah Magic with Sunday Dech and David Okwera combining for 57 points.
The Eagles were back at Peter Campbell Basketball Arena on Saturday night to play host to the Magic with East Perth hunting a third win of the season, but having been more competitive than 2-4 suggests.
East Perth's losses to Willetton and Perth were on the back of lobs on the buzzer towards Okwera not quite coming off so the Eagles were looking to start building some momentum but it was never going to be easy against the impressive Magic line-up.
Mandurah arrived at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre having won four of eight games, but also being more impressive than that suggests to set up a fascinating match up.
The Eagles started impressively scoring 12 straight points in the first quarter to be leading 18-6 but Mandurah worked back into the contest and it was just a two-point game by quarter-time.
The Magic then worked on top in the second term leading by as much as seven but by half-time it remained deadlocked at 59-59.
No more than eight points separated the two teams through the entire second half from there and scores were all level again when Sunday Dech hit a triple for the Eagles with five minutes to play.
He hit another soon after to give East Perth the lead but scores were back level with 3:45 to go after a bucket to Julian Pesava for the Magic.
It was the combination of Dech and Okwera who would seal the win for East Perth firstly with Dech making his seventh triple of the night and then Okwera throwing down a dunk in transition in spectacular fashion after Sharif Watson forced the turnover.
That had the Eagles up five and they would hold on to win by two and improve to a 3-4 record as a result.
Sunday Dech was massive for the Eagles finishing with 32 points, 11 rebounds and six assists on 11/17 shooting from the floor and 7/11 from three-point range.

South West Slammers (80) lost to Perry Lakes Hawks (92)
It was the best example of a game of two halves you will ever see with the Perry Lakes Hawks coming back from a 26-point deficit to beat the South West Slammers 92-80.
The Slammers were back home at Eaton Recreation Centre looking to snap a six-game losing slide including on Friday night to the Cockburn Cougars while the Hawks arrived also looking to bounce back from Friday's home defeat to the Warwick Senators.
South West turned up the tempo from the start and produced a stunning first half performance including opening up an 11-point lead by quarter-time with Buay Tuach at the centre of everything.
The Slammers then caught fire in the second period to see that lead balloon out to 26 points on the back of the home team going on a 13-0 scoring run.
Perry Lakes did stop the rot a little before half-time but still South West were in control leading 54-37 at the break.
However, the signs had been there of the Hawks turning momentum before half-time and they did it completely in the second half to be every bit as dominant as the Slammers were in the first half, and more so.
Perry Lakes would go on to outscore the Slammers 55 points to 26 in the second half to turn a 26-point deficit into a 12-point win of their own to improve to a 4-5 record on the season.

Willetton Tigers (99) defeated Cockburn Cougars (97)
The Willetton Tigers have kept their momentum going with a sixth straight win beating the Cockburn Cougars 99-97 with Rhys Vague's attempt at an eighth three-pointer not falling at the death.
Games between the two local rivals always take on extra significance and this one was no different at Willetton Basketball Stadium with former Tiger Hunter Clarke coming up against his old team for the first time.
Willetton junior Kyle Armour was also celebrating his 300th game in the league in his first season at the Cougars to add to the occasion while the Tigers entered the match up on a five-game winning run.
Cockburn had also returned to the winner's list the night before at home to the South West Slammers and the Cougars started well to lead by four early on before the Tigers went on a 10-0 scoring run, and were up 23-17 after one.
The Willetton lead got out to 18 points in the second period but Rhys Vague's shot started to fall and Cockburn fired back into the contest to be again down just six at half-time.
Willetton was again able to push out to a 15-point lead in the third frame but again Cockburn kept on coming. Not only did the Cougars stay in touch, but when they completed a 16-0 run either side of three quarter-time, they found themselves in front.
A couple of three-pointers from Gavin Field in what could be his last ever game in the building gave Cockburn the lead midway through the fourth, but then his former championship teammate Damien Scott tied scores up again for Willetton.
Vague responded with his sixth three of the night to restore a three-point Cockburn advantage with Vague then making a seventh triple to give the Cougars a six-point lead.
Willetton responded by scoring the next six points before Michael Dupree helped them regain the lead with two minutes to play.
Marshall Nelson then knocked down a three ball to put the Tigers back up four but still the Cougars wouldn’t go away. Vague hit a jumper to make the margin two and then on the last possession he had an attempt for an eighth triple of the game that would have been the game winner.
It just rimmed out for the Tigers to hold on to win by two and make it six in-a-row to improve to 7-1 on the season.

The two teams had just done battle at Belmont Oasis last Sunday with the Redbacks beating the Giants in a thriller by five points and all things pointed to another similar contest on Saturday night in Kalgoorlie.
It was the Giants holding a 26-22 lead by the end of the first quarter but the Redbacks then got on a roll in the second term even with Joe Cook-Green giving it a go to return from injury, but only lasting five minutes.
The Redbacks were able to end up leading by as much as nine points in the third quarter and were still up eight early in the fourth term, but then the Giants were able to ride the momentum the rest of the way.

Rockingham Flames (77) lost to Joondalup Wolves (80)
The Joondalup Wolves showed their championship credentials by putting in a strong performance to beat the Rockingham Flames on their home floor 80-77.
With the Wolfpack coming into the game unbeaten after five games this season and the Flames having won six of their seven games, then it was always going to be a fascinating match up at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.
Add in that it was the first time the two teams have met since last year's remarkable overtime preliminary final where the Wolves won also in Rockingham to advance to the Grand Final and it took on extra significance.
Then throw in last year's Joondalup import, Quintin Dove, now playing for Rockingham and coming up against his former team for the first time and all the makings were there for a classic.
It was a fascinating battle all evening on the back of all that and it was the visiting Wolves who got the better of the start to score 11 straight points to lead by eight, and still be up 18-13 by quarter-time.
The Wolfpack advantage grew to 14 points in the second quarter with the visitors still leading 44-32 going into the half-time interval.
Rockingham were always going to make a charge and the home team did briefly hit the lead in the third quarter when Dove knocked down a three-pointer against his former team.
Joondalup responded with the next seven points but the Flames kept on coming and eventually found their way back on top thanks to an inside finish from Gorjok Gak with just under five minutes to play.
New signing Jono Janssen's three-pointer with just over three minutes to play had Rockingham back on top by two and the big guns were flexing their muscles when CJ Turnage and Devondrick Walker traded buckets.
In the end, four clutch free-throws from Caleb Davis put Joondalup back up by three and that's where they would stay when Walker's three-point attempt at the buzzer didn’t fall for Rockingham.
The Wolves improve to 6-0 with the road victory with CJ Turnage finishing with 27 points, eight rebounds and two assists on 11/20 shooting from the floor.
