Having played across the world, the back-to-back NBL1 West MVP Devondrick Walker says that Australia has been his favourite destination and is now where he calls home.
“You can actually build relations in Australia, versus you just play, get your money and go,” he said on Under the Surface.
“Rockingham is family to me, they embraced me and family, embraced my wife and daughter. Everything that has come out of Rockingham has given me something to keep going, moving forward.
"Even working with the Lynx, all based on Rockingham's situation... It’s opened so many doors and avenues to stay in this beautiful country.”
Working under Perth Lynx head coach Ryan Petrik (Walker’s head coach in the NBL1), he has taken on a coaching and player development role for the WNBL team.
He explained that his main role on the team is working with the Lynx players on their shooting and their mentality for the game – skills like knowing how to bounce back from a tough loss.
“Whatever you feel you can bring to the team, you got to find a way to lock back in on that,” he said on Under the Surface.
“Your mistakes usually come from things that you aren’t the best at.”
Heading to next season, the 2022 NBL1 National Champion says it’s exciting to be the team to beat in the competition.
“I might hurt some feelings here, but when you are the team to beat in the NBL1. It feels good to be that,” he said.
“I’ve never been in a position where I’m the team to beat. In the past couple of years, if you beat Rockingham, you get a pretty good win under your belt. I’m proud of that. So just having that title defence at all times is good to have.”
The NBL1 West season starts on March 28th, see the full fixture here.
