After suffering a major injury in the backend of her season with Lulea Basket in Sweden, newly signed Tayah Burrows has found her feet at the Willetton Tigers in NBL1 West.
The WA-born guard was set to play a season down south with the Mount Gambier Pioneers in 2024, but a broken foot injury whilst playing overseas in Sweden has set her back, resulting in undergoing rehab in her home state.
“I’m nearly three months post-surgery, it was a pretty major surgery so it’s been a slow process,” Burrows said via the Fast Break Podcast.
“I just started walking a couple of weeks ago and hopefully into running soon. Building very slowly, starting to get back on the court which is nice but definitely missing being on court. I’m very eager to get back.”
The Tigers reached out to Burrows offering her a place on the team, where she has developed a leadership role under head coach Simon Parker.
“Simon has given me that role to mentor the younger girls and them advice and help them out,” she said.
“I just communicate with them and when I see things in games I’m helping them out and giving them a few pointers.”
Hopeful to make a comeback in the near future, the 22-year-old had stated what she will bring to a Tigers court, after having experienced the NBL1 West since she was just 14 years old where she debuted for the Slammers.
“Most people know me as being aggressive and pretty in your face on the court. So, I think that aggressive nature and a bit of leadership,” Burrows said.
“That’s what you can expect from me, and I think most people know that around the league that’s for sure.”
When asked about her predictions for the Tigers’ upcoming clash with the second-placed Warwick Senators, Burrows didn’t shy away from the tough matchup that will play out, but showed faith in her team to get the job done.
“It’s going to be tough, we’re gonna have to lock down on defence and make sure we know what they’re trying to do,” she said.
“If we can stick to the game plan and stick with our system then we’ll have a good chance.”
Tip-off between the Tigers and Senators is 6:30pm local time on Friday night. You can watch the game live via NBL1.com.au or the NBL1 App.
