Dual sports champion Tom Wilson is returning to the basketball courts in 2024, competing in the NBL1 South with the Melbourne Tigers.
Highly touted as one of Australia's best junior basketball talents as proven by his position in Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence in Canberra, Wilson announced himself to the world with a 23-point game in the U17 World Championship Final against the USA.
However, after exploring US College and international opportunities, Wilson took the leap across to the AFL as a Category B Rookie with Collingwood, where he played 8 games for the Magpies. Following the premiership season for Collingwood, Wilson made the call to return to basketball where he'll reunite with many of his past junior teammates and coach Andrew Gaze.
No stranger to the second tier of basketball in Australia, Wilson played in the former SEABL competition where in 2018 he won the Most Valuable Player award, whilst also being awarded the Youth Player of the Year in both 2017 and 2018, doing so as part of the Melbourne Tigers team.
The 26-year-old's junior career was littered with state and national championships as part of the Melbourne Tigers and Victoria Metropolitan teams, and he hopes to help guide Melbourne back up the NBL1 South ladder in 2024.
Wilson spoke about his return to basketball and the Melbourne Tigers.
“I’m super excited to be coming back to the Melbourne Tigers. There’s a lot of people at this club who have had a big influence on not just my basketball journey but also my life. I’m really looking forward to seeing those familiar faces again.”
“The Tigers have always felt like home and there was no other way I was going to come back to basketball without coming home. This club is a special place!”
Wilson joins Melbourne Tigers’ announced signings Mason Gaze and NBL1 South 2023 Co-MVP Jack Purchase.
