The best of the best revealed: Who made the NWBU teams of the decade?

Team Of Centry

Reaching an agreement on the very best of the last five decades of the North West Basketball Union was the easy part.

But who to leave out wasn't as clear cut.

The likes of Ben and Sam Armstrong, Briana Hutton, Cassie Jordan and Phil Thomas are just some of the names selected in the teams of each decade as well as the NWBU teams of 50 years.

Bec Triffett, who is one of the selectors, said that plenty of great conversations were had during the selection process, ahead of last nights 50 year celebrations in Devonport.

"We settled pretty quickly on who should be in the team but then it was just who we should leave out. There's been so many fantastic players, decade by decade.

"But then overall, in the team of 50 years, I'm sure there's a lot of names that people feel should have made it.

"We've had some fantastic imports that come in and made a life for themselves. But as well as that, we've had some fantastic women from the Coast that made it their own."

Triffett, who is a former player and coach, was joined by Basketball Tasmania chair Trudy Pearce, NWBU life member Lou Cox, JackJumpers' assistant coach Mark Radford and Julian O'Brien in finalising the awards.

She highlighted the importance of those off the court that have made a contribution during the 50 years of the competition.

"It's especially important not to forget where the league started and to celebrate the moments along the way," she said.

"It's also about making sure we recognise the contributions made by the whole community, and understanding it's not just about the players on the floor."
