Basketball Ballarat have announced the signing of Matthew Kenyon who will join the Ballarat Miners for the 2021 NBL1 South Season.
Kenyon will join Ballarat after recently playing in Cairns for the Australian Boomers in a Asian Cup qualifier having had previous experience with the NBL's Brisbane Bullets and the NBA G-League's South Bay Lakers.
Kenyon hales from Avoca Bay and is looking forward to stepping onto the court at the Ballarat Sports Events Centre this season.
“I’m super excited about coming to Ballarat for the NBL1 South Season. Looking forward to meeting the guys and getting to know everyone when I get there. It should be an exciting year,” Kenyon said.
As the Miners Roster comes together, Kenyon will bring a competitive edge and wealth of experience to the team.
“First and foremost I want to win. One of the main reasons I signed here was because I knew I’d be surrounded by other good players and coaching. So winning is first, but also to put a great individual season together and show how much I’ve grown over the past few years not only physically but also mentally,” Kenyon said.
Kenyon is looking forward to being active in the local community and meeting all the supporters of Basketball Ballarat.
“Of course, I always enjoy being in new environments and getting to know the people I’m surrounded by on a daily basis. I’ve heard it’s a tight knit community so I’m excited to be a part of it,” Kenyon ended with.
Coach Brendan Joyce was looking forward to the versatility that Kenyon will bring the team.
“Matt will bring his valuable experience and provide depth and versatile guard play to the team and be able to play some multiple positions from one to three,” Joyce said.
“He is also a product of the Centre of Excellence as a past scholarship holder and had a brief stint in the NBL with the Brisbane Bullets before suffering a knee injury a few years ago. He then ventured to the USA to gain valuable experience in the G-League to continue to improve his game.”
Joyce said he enjoyed the way Kenyon plays and was hopeful he was able to use the season as a stepping stone back into the NBL.
“He is an excellent penetrator and l always liked his aggression and willingness to defend. We as coaches will also be working to continue to develop his game to help us succeed as a team but also help him so he can get back to playing in the NBL,” Joyce ended with.
Kenyon joins Zac Dunmore, Jordan Lingard and Daniel Joyce as announced players on the Miners roster. The 2021 NBL1 South Season will commence on April 19th when the team travels to Albury to take on the Albury-Wodonga Bandits
