Bendigo have announced the appointment of Josh Cheney as Head Coach of the Braves' NBL1 South Men’s program for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Cheney joins the Braves with experience across elite, semi-professional and development environments. His coaching background includes time with the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL as a Development Coach, along with involvement in NBL1 South programs at the Kilsyth Cobras and Geelong Supercats. He has also coached Youth Championship level, with a focus on player development and pathway progression.

Recognised for his structured and detail-based approach, Cheney has worked extensively in athlete development systems and performance environments, preparing players for higher-level competition.

Cheney will relocate from Melbourne to Bendigo and will begin working with the program ahead of the upcoming NBL1 South seasons, engaging with both senior and pathway structures at the club.

Cheney said the opportunity to contribute to the Braves program appealed to him.

“Bendigo is a passionate basketball community with a rich history of success and a strong commitment to developing young players,” Cheney said.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead the Braves Men’s team and look forward to building strong relationships across the program, creating an environment where athletes are challenged, supported, and able to progress in their basketball journey.”

CEO David Elliott said Cheney’s appointment supports the club’s existing pathway model.

“Josh brings a high level of professionalism, basketball IQ and pathway experience to our men’s program,” Elliott said.

“His background across elite, NBL1 and development environments aligns strongly with our vision for the Bendigo Braves – building competitive teams while creating clear opportunities for local and emerging athletes. We’re excited to welcome Josh to Bendigo and confident he will make a positive impact both on and off the court.”
