After reaching the semi-finals last season, the Cockburn Cougars Women’s have already stamped their authority on this season by picking up where they left off.

NBL1 West analyst Greg Hire spoke on the Cougars Women’s first round success on the first episode of this season’s The NBL1 Show.

In the opening round of the NBL1 West season, the Cougars dominated their rivals, the Willetton Tigers, in an impressive 42-point win at home.

“A pretty emphatic result to be like, hey we’re stamping our authority on this league. They can only go on and up,” Hire said.

Hire reiterated the Cougars have been working hard in the off-season in preparation of what will be an even bigger year in the hopes to claim the title.

“In these first parts you’re still figuring out where you’re at as a side and what that offseason looks like,” he said.

Tyrone Thwaites, head coach of the Cougars Women’s team, was praised by Hire for putting together a stronger roster than last year.

“He’s recruited exceptionally well in the offseason; they’ve continued to grow not only as a club but for that Women’s side over the last couple of years,” Hire said.

“Massive result against their rivals [Willetton Tigers]. Willetton were obviously missing a few players but watch this space.”

Hire also mentioned some key players which took to the stage on Saturday night. Jewel Williams, the reigning NBL1 West Youth Player of the Year, top-scored with 25 points.

Import Jessie Edwards made an impact in their 97-55 win, shooting 60 per cent from the field with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Hire urged fans to “watch this space” to see what else the Cougars will pull off for the 2023 season.
