It was a stunning opening from the defending championships with the Mustangs opening up an 18-point lead in the first quarter thanks to shooting 11/19 from the field and the Gunners going just 3/15.
However, Canberra did get back into the contest in the second period outscoring the Mustangs 23 points to 14 on the way to only trailing by five points at half-time.
But Maitland took back control in the third quarter with another 23 points to 15 to end up leading by 17 points and this time there would be no fightback from the Gunners with the Mustangs going on to score the 14-point victory.
The victory improves the Mustangs to a 5-2 record on the season as defending champions with Daniel Millburn producing 24 points and four rebounds on 10/17 shooting from the field.
