Star of the NBL1 South Eltham Wildcats and development player for the South East Melbourne Phoenix Owen Foxwell has been on a tear as of late.

Against Mount Gambier in Round 10 he scored 33 points, filling the starting role left by an absent Sam Short. In Round 11 Eltham beat NW Tasmania in an overtime win, with Foxwell starring with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals off the bench.

Foxwell joined the Coles Express NBL1 Show this week and spoke about his team's recent success.

“We started 0-8 as a group, but we would be the youngest side in the league,” he said.

“Everybody on the team just knows how to fight, all of our wins we’ve had to claw it back or we’ve had to work really hard to win ... we’ve won four of our last seven, so we are on a good high going into the back end of the season.”

Foxwell spoke about his mindset of playing on and off the bench in recent games. Being able to adapt to his situation has been a key strength in his young career. In a Throwdown game last season in NBL22, he was subbed into the game in the first quarter, making an impact straight away.

“I don’t have a problem coming off the bench, whatever role the team wants me to play I’m happy with that,” he said.

“[Coach Craig Stratford] has told me he has full confidence in me, he just wants me to come in and do what I do … he knows I can provide what I do best if I come off the bench or starting.”

Basketball fans may get used to the name ‘Foxwell’. As Owen is just one of many talented basketballers in his family.

All three of the Foxwell's currently play or have played for the Bulleen Boomers. Owen’s brother Joel won silver in the U18 Nationals in Ballarat in April and is already getting close to 3000 likes on highlight mixtapes, via the baseline.hoops Instagram page. Meanwhile, youngest brother Austin won gold in the U16 National Championships in Perth in early July.

Foxwell says the backyard games between the three of them can be pretty competitive.

“They know who’s on top,” he added.

“We used to play a lot of games, over COVID there were a lot of games running in the backyard. Both [my brothers] are extremely talented and could play professionally in the future. I look forward to hopefully playing with them.”
