Employment Opportunity - Lakeside Lightning NBL1 Men’s Head Coach/Head of Coaching

We are excited to be seeking an NBL1 Men’s Head Coach, either separate or combined with the role of Head of Coaching, to be a key role player in leading our Lakeside Lightning basketball program into the future.

About Lakeside

Lakeside Baptist Church Incorporated (Lakeside), located in North Lake, 20 km from the Perth CBD, is a unique organisation. It began in the late 1980s as a small church with a desire to reach the local community through a facility that could be used every day of the week. In February 1992, Lakeside held its first church service on ‘Court One’, and the Recreation Centre was officially launched the following month.

Today, Lakeside is a thriving community facility, with around 8,000 people each week participating in a wide range of programs and sporting competitions. At its heart, Lakeside serves as a meeting place — a hub where lives intersect, whether on the basketball court, in the café, at the gym, or through one of the many programs and activities that express the church’s presence and ministries. Lakeside exists for the whole community to enjoy and benefit from. Because our vision, mission and operation are distinctly Christian, the facility is open and welcoming to all.

Our Vision

To be a Regional Christian Community Centre with an igniting passion for God and His kingdom throughout our community and beyond by reflecting the life-changing message of Christ in all that we do.

Our Mission

Lakeside exists to Encourage, Equip, and Empower people to say “yes” to Jesus.

About Lakeside Lightning

A key part of Lakeside is the missional basketball program “Where it’s more than a game”.

Currently the scope of the Lightning includes Men’s and Women’s Teams in the NBL1 West competition – the premier basketball competition in WA – as well as a thriving junior program, with 34 teams competing in the WA Basketball League (WABL) from U12s to U20s. Lakeside Lightning also contributes to and makes possible the basketball development pathway that takes our youngest players from Aussie Hoops all the way through to our NBL1 teams.

About the Role

The NBL1 Men’s Coach/Head of Coaching is a key leadership role within Lakeside Baptist Church’s sports ministry, combining elite basketball coaching and pathway development with life-changing ministry.

Reporting to the Lightning General Manager, you will lead the Lightning Basketball Program — including NBL1, WABL, and basketball development across the Recreation Centre and wider community — with a dual focus on sporting excellence and Christian mission, ensuring the Lakeside Lightning remains a respected part of the Basketball WA community.

You will be responsible for:

  •  NBL1 Men’s Team – Lead and coach the Men’s NBL1 team to excel on and off the court, building a high-performance culture with strong values.
  •  Coaching Leadership – Lead strategy, structures and development processes for WABL coaches to ensure alignment and high performance throughout all age groups
  •  Player Development – Oversee and implement clear pathways from grassroots to elite levels (NBL1 & WABL), including player skill development, coaching support, and talent identification.
  •  Ministry Impact – Use basketball as a platform to build relationships, provide pastoral care, and share the good news of Jesus with players, coaches, officials, and the community.
  •  Culture Building – Foster a vibrant, caring, and professional culture that reflects our mission: “Where it’s more than a game”.
  •  Community Engagement – Maintain strong ties with the Basketball WA community, engage with supporters and sponsors, and promote the Lakeside Lightning program.
  •  Active Church Involvement – Be an engaged member of Lakeside Baptist Church, living out your faith and integrating it into your leadership.

This is more than a coaching position — it’s an opportunity to combine sporting success with “real-life” ministry, impacting lives both on and off the court.

The combined role is full-time (5 days equivalent per week) and will require work outside of regular business hours. Depending on the appropriate candidate(s), the role could be separated into two part time roles.

About You

To be successful in this role you will bring recognised basketball coaching accreditation (minimum Level 2, with Level 3 desirable), a proven track record of success at elite basketball level, and solid experience in player and program development across all ages. You will be an inspiring leader who can motivate players, coaches and volunteers while managing the demands of a high-performance environment with professionalism and excellence. Alongside your coaching expertise, you will demonstrate strong organisational, administrative and communication skills, and be confident engaging with sponsors, parents, and the wider basketball community. Most importantly, you will have a growing personal faith in Jesus Christ, a heart for ministry and evangelism, and a passion for using basketball as a platform to share the life-changing message of Christ. With integrity, humility and a servant-hearted approach, you will build authentic relationships, care for and disciple others, and contribute to the vibrant culture of Lakeside Baptist Church and the Lightning Program.

How to Apply

Please apply by submitting a cover letter indicating your suitability to the role(s) and resume to recruitment@lakeside.asn.au. A detailed job description and/or confidential discussion can be requested.

Applications close at 5.00pm AWST, Friday 5 September 2025.
