The Perth Redbacks are the talk of the NBL1 West

The Perth Redbacks are the talk of the NBL1 West after they beat the then-undefeated Rockingham Flames at home in Ryan Godfrey’s 300th game.

Former Flame and NBL1 West Expert Greg Hire said the event was spoiled by the Redback’s hellacious defence.

“It was supposed to be a celebration on Saturday night but unfortunately the Rockingham Flames were dossed by the Perth Redbacks,” Hire said on The NBL1 Show

Hire praised Maris Colton in particular for his efforts to lockdown the reigning MVP Devondrick Walker to a measly 14 points and 31 percent shooting from the field.

But the headline for the game was Bryton Hobbs, who recorded 33 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the 27-point win over the inaugural Coles Express NBL1 National Champions.

“He was just a problem for that Rockingham Flames outfit," Hire said.

“They couldn’t guard him on the pick and roll.”

The former Flame said the Redbacks created the template on how to beat the Flames.

“If I was any coach around the league, I’d be watching that game,” he said.

“They stymied Rockingham, I know they shot 11 percent from the three-point line, making five for the whole game – that’s unlike the Flames and Ryan Petrik will respond.

“But what the Redbacks did was slow the game down, it became grindy and grimy. But I’d be watching that as a scouting report.”
