After months of failed meetings, public comments and sleepless nights, Tasmania's two Northern semi-professional basketball clubs have learned their fates.

Basketball Tasmania has confirmed that a Launceston Tornadoes entity has been awarded the NBL1 South licence over the North West Thunder, which will commence in the 2026 season.

Now known as Northern Tasmania Basketball Club, the Tornadoes' submission was formally ratified by the NBL1 South League Advisory Panel and endorsed by Basketball Tasmania on Thursday.

The club will play 11 home games from next season, shared between Launceston and Ulverstone on a likely five-six game split.

Details, including branding, player rosters and coaches, will be determined in the coming weeks.
