The former Tasmanian JackJumper has put together an impressive start to his tenure with the Hobart Chargers, leading them to a 4-2 record going into Round 5.
Head Coach Jarred Weeks took over the Chargers roster this past off-season, retaining star big man Ole Angerstein and bringing in a lot of new, complementary pieces around the 2022 championship-winning core.
Depsite the hot start, the season looked bleak as two-time NBL1 East MVP Will Cranston-Lown suffered a significant ankle injury in Round 3 -- that will set him back for possibly six to eight weeks.
Weeks tried to recruit Anthony Drmic before the season started, but the NBL champion was hesitant, given his run of back-to-back seasons between the NBL and NBL1 – citing rest as the key factor in not playing.
But given the circumstances and a short-term contract, Weeks was finally able to convince the NBL1 Central champion Anthony Drmic to steady the ship, and it most certainly paid off this weekend.
Filling in as point guard, Drmic had an outstanding Round 4 start against Keilor in a 95-88 win. From 19 points down in the third quarter to a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter, the championship DNA saved Hobart late in the stretch.
He finished with 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, backing that up with 15 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists in a five-point loss to Geelong the next day.
“I was going to take the off-season off, but Weeksy kept pestering me,” he said on Chargers TV.
“And with the young feller getting injured, it worked out for me to slip in and play a couple of games here.”
The Hobart Chargers will make the trip over to Victoria this weekend, playing against JackJumpers teammate Brody Nunn with the Knox Raiders on Saturday night and Bendigo on Sunday afternoon
