The Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants have re-signed Hamish Cummings ahead of the 2023 NBL1 West season.

The Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants have re-signed Hamish Cummings ahead of the 2023 NBL1 West season.

Cummings, a 182cm guard, joined the Giants in 2021 after a distinguished representative junior career where he played for Western Australia at numerous National Championships.

At 22 years of age, this will be the player’s sixth season playing in the SBL/NBL1 and he is looking forward to a season of growth alongside his teammates.

“I think this season is going to be a really good opportunity for us to grow,” he said.

“We're starting to get a lot of the same guys back each year, starting to build something here, which is really good.

“I think if we just keep progressing that motion we will be alright.”

The guard averaged 7.7ppg, 1.7apg and 1.5rpg last season.

Head coach Scott Manton said he has been impressed with Cummings throughout his time in Kalgoorlie.

"I believe he is ready to take a step up in 2023,” he said.

“He has excellent knowledge of the game, has impressed with his leadership skills with the younger players in the squad and I firmly believe the best is yet to come for him.”

Cummings moved to the region to get more basketball opportunity after three SBL seasons, he was afforded that with the club's injury woes in the 2021 season, and he relished the increased responsibility.

He said preseason training has been going well so far.

“It's a bit tough out here at the moment, very hot but we are getting there,” he said.

“We've got a lot of young guys down at training at the moment, getting them involved and up to speed. It's good for all of us, making us focus on the little things.

“My contribution is just doing all the little things I can do to help the team wherever that's needed, whether it's helping lead some other guys, shooting well, doing the little things.”

Cummings is currently in preseason training ahead of the NBL1 West season opener on April 1.
