Bears bounce back to hand CoE third consecutive loss

The Norths Bears started on fire to hit back from a loss the previous evening in the NBL1 East to beat the Centre of Excellence 92-87 at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday at the expense of the Sutherland Sharks so they needed to hit back against the CoE on Sunday at North Sydney Indoor Sports Centre.

The Centre of Excellence came into the game losing a third straight match as well the previous evening at the expense of the league-leading Manly Warringah Sea Eagles so both teams were attempting to hit back.

Norths did well to start the game and lead by eight points at quarter-time before going on a 10-0 run to open up a 20-point lead in the second period, and to still be on top 56-38 at the major break.

The Centre of Excellence threw everything at a comeback in the third quarter going on a 13-0 run, but still the Bears were back out to a 15-point lead in the fourth stanza.

However, the Basketball Australia young guns did storm home with another nine straight points but just came up short with the Bears holding on for the five-point win.

The victory improves the Bears to a 12-3 record after splitting their two games this weekend while the CoE have lost four straight to be 13-6.

Jolene Anderson finished up top-scoring for Norths with 17 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals on 5/11 shooting from three-point territory.

Emily Simons added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Bears, Carla Pitman 14 points and four boards, Sarah Schicher 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, Emma Donnelly nine points and three boards, and Kate Seebohm eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Lara Somfai delivered 20 points on 6/8 shooting from the field and 8/9 from the free-throw line for the Centre of Excellence.

Isla Juffermans added 18 points and six rebounds, Saffron Shiels 12 points and three boards, and Jayda Clark 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

MEN

Centre of Excellence beat Crusaders for 13 straight

The Centre of Excellence continued their dominant form this NBL1 East season beating the Central Coast Crusaders 104-89 on Sunday.

The Basketball Australia young guns made it 12 consecutive wins beating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles by 30 points on Saturday night ahead of Sunday's clash with the Crusaders.

It was Central Coast's lone appearance of the weekend too as they attempting to snap an eight-game losing streak, but it wasn’t to be.

The Centre of Excellence team opened up a 13-point lead during the opening quarter and were still up by 12 in the second, but then Central Coast got on a roll.

The Crusaders finished the first half strongly and then started the second half on fire too to grab the lead and be on top by as much as eight points attempting to snap the CoE's winning streak.

However, the Centre of Excellence took back control with 32 points to 18 in the final quarter to end up winning by 15 to improve to 19-1 on the season with 13 straight victories.

There were plenty of strong performance once more for the CoE team with Perth Wildcats NBL signing Ben Henshall producing 23 points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals.

John Furphy added 23 points, six rebounds and four assists, Julius Halaifonua 16 points and three assists, Luke Fennell 10 points, four rebounds and three dimes, Kye Savage nine points and four assists, and James O'Donnell nine points and eight rebounds.

Luke Cassidy top-scored for the Crusaders with 19 points and five rebounds with James Trustum adding 17 points and six boards, Jamal Shoaib 11 points and two assists, William Bates 10 points, two rebounds and two blocks, and Aaron Lawton 10 points, six assists, three boards and two steals.
