NBL1 East recap: Round 3- Friday 23 April

NBL1 East continued on Friday night, with the stand out event being the return of Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson. Making her NBL1 debut and her first game back since her retirement in 2016.

NBL1 East continued on Friday night, with the stand out event being the return of Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson. Making her NBL1 debut and her first game back since her retirement in 2016.

WOMEN

Sutherland Sharks (79) def Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (69)

Sutherland's Lauren Nicholson was the game-best scorer with 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds in the win over the Sea Eagles.

Vanessa Panousis controlled the tempo with four assists and gave their starters an even spread of points, only one starter didn't score in double digits. Courtney West was a standout, she had a major double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds in only 20 minutes on the court. 

Warringah struggled to get the ball in the basket from the land of plenty, shooting 27 percent (6/22) from outside. Meg Jeffs was the only Sea Eagle to score more than one triple.

MANLY 69 (Hodge 15, Delaney 13, Bulman 11)

 

Norths Bears (98) def Maitland Mustangs (63)

In a dominant 35 point win, the Bears convincingly took down the Mustangs. Off the bench Riley Evans was a sniper, making five three-pointers, she was the game's leading scorer and was on fire all game. Six Bears scored in double digits and Madeleine O'Hehir had a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists in the win. 

The Mustangs only scored 20 points or more in one quarter, when the game's result was already decided. The lockdown defence by the Bears held them to nine points in the second quarter. Mikela Dombkins had a near triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, but it wasn't enough to get the win. 

NORTH SYDNEY 98 (Evans 21, Schicher 14, O'Hehir and Simons 12)

MAITLAND 63 (Dombkins 17, Griffin 14, Fox 9)

 

Hill Hornets (58) def Newcastle Falcons (54)

In only a four-point win, the Hornets stuck the landing on their home court with a team effort against the Falcons. Paris Roditis scored 14 points with five assists, six steals but had 10 turnovers, the Hornets won with no player scoring over 15 points. 

Off the bench Jessica Relf gave the Falcons a much-needed boost, scoring a game-high 19 points and getting to the free-throw line 11 times. Kate Kingham was the only player for Newcastle to make a triple, leaving the team in a 1-15 shooting slump for the game.

HILLS 58 (Roditis 14, Pentney and Mahoney 10)

NEWCASTLE 54 (Relf 19, McGinniskin 12, Kingham and Johnson 7)

 

Illawarra Hawks (84) def Inner West Bulls (62)

The Hawks won by 22 points on their home floor against the Bulls, Rebecca Abel led the way with 22 points in the game. Illawarra had 28 points in the second quarter which blew open the game, while Ella Dent scored 16 points and had 10 assists, seven steals and six rebounds to secure the win. 

Inner West could not match their firepower, their team leader in scoring was Georgia Stiron with 15 points and sunk two triples in her 30 minutes.

INNER WEST 62 (Stirton 15, Pogonza-Dumas 12, O'Flynn 10)

 

Albury-Wodonga Bandits (78) def Central Coast Crusaders (61)

In the feel-good story of the night, the G.O.A.T, Lauren Jackson made her return to the court for the Bandits and had a monster performance of  21 points, five triples, five rebounds and a block. Ai Yamada was an attack dog all night, she got to the line seven times and scored 19 points in a convincing win. 

The Crusaders gave the Bandits a good fight, Sara Matthews scored a game-high 22 points with four three-pointers while collecting 10 rebounds in just over 30 minutes. Matthews and Elizajane Loadewr were the only two Crusaders to score in double digits.  

ALBURY-WODONGA 78 (Jackson 21, Yamada 19, Theodore 12)

CENTRAL COAST 61 (Matthews 22, Loader 10, Miller 8)

 

MEN

Central Coast Crusaders (88) def Albury-Wodonga Bandits (83)

The Crusaders stole the win on the Bandits' home court in the five-point win, Callum Jenkins was a star scoring 27 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in a monster display. Jacob Cracknell had multiple highlight plays with 19 points to add.  

For Albury, Lochlan Cummings matched Jenkins' 27 points and made six triples in 38 minutes of play. Including a mixtape worthy ankle breaker.

Duom Dawam was everywhere, the third player in this game to score 27 points but also had eight rebounds and two blocks.

CENTRAL COAST 61 (Jenkins 27, J.Cracknell 19, Trustman 17)

ALBURY-WODONGA 78 (Dawam and Cummings 27, B.Jenkins 9)

 

Norths Bears (76) def Maitland Mustangs (74)

The Bears led by Brennan Rymer closed out the four-point win at home against the Mustangs. Rymer had a game-high 25 points and six rebounds with five assists. The Bears' bench scored 27 points and helped hold the lead while the starters rested.

The American import Terrell Turner scored 22 points and had many flashy plays throughout the game, his efforts were supported by Scott McGann who had 16 points and nine rebounds. 

NORTH SYDNEY 76 (Rymer 25, Jerome 10, Freire, Blair, Bose and Yoong 7)

MAITLAND 74 ( Turner 22, McGann 16,  Cranston-Lown 10)

 

Sutherland Sharks (72) def Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (66)

The Sharks were led by former Sydney King Lochlan Hutchison, in a dazzling display of scoring and playmaking, he set the tone for the game and got Sutherland the win -- he finished with 12 points and six assists. Archer Woodhill lived up to his first name, making two triples and scoring 16 in the match. 

Warringah was close with a team effort, with four starters scoring in double digits. Kyle Painter cleaned the glass with nine rebounds and added 13 points to the board.

MANLY 66 (White 15, Painter 13, Faithfull 12)

 

Newcastle Falcons (82) def Hill Hornets (50) 

Newcastle stormed into the Hills and threw down a 32 point win. Myles Cherry had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Matur Maluach was the game-high scorer with 21 points. 

The Hills' Liam Moss was a smooth operator with the ball, with feathery dribbles he scored in and around the Falcons' defence with 12 points on the board. He was the only Hornets in double digits.

NEWCASTLE 82 (Maluach 21, Beisty 17, Cherry and Dorricott 12)

HILLS 50 (Moss 12, Brotherson and Prakash 9, Patmore 5)

 

Illawarra Hawks (87) def Inner West Bulls (75)

The Hawks took care of business at home, with a night-high 30 points Kiwi Gardner had a terrific game adding seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to his box score. Harry Morris scored 20 points and made four triples to give the Bulls a pick your poison test. Off the bench, Oscar Forman scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds with some clutch late-game defence. 

The Bulls' Jasper Rentoy tried his hardest to dent the Hawks' defence, scoring 20 points in a variety of slick moves. Chier Maker also had 20 points with 13 rebounds but it wasn't enough to take down the Hawks at home.
