NBL1 North Recap | Friday Women's Round 10

Cayla George and Ariana Moorer produced big triple-doubles in NBL1 North Women's wins for their teams on Friday night while Lara McSpadden was huge in an overtime win for the Rockhampton Cyclones while Steph Reid sparked the Townsville Flames.

There were four Round 10 NBL1 North matches on Friday night with wins for the Townsville Flames, Rockhampton Cyclones, Red City Roar and Cairns Dolphins.

The Friday night action got underway with the Townsville Flames beginning their road triple-header beating the Southern Districts Spartans 77-64.

Steph Reid put up 23 points and seven assists for Townsville with Jamie Seebohm adding 16 points and 10 rebounds with Leah Scott delivering 23 points and 11 boards for the Spartans.

It was an overtime thriller at Hibiscus Sorts Stadium and in the extra period it was the Rockhampton Cyclones who got on top to beat the South West Metro Pirates 94-87.

Lara McSpadden finished up with 21 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in the win for the Cyclones while Cat MacGregor put up 27 points on six three-pointers for the Pirates.

The Red City Roar then produced an impressive performance at home to bet the Northside Wizards 95-80.

Jaylen Cooper scored 28 points for the Roar with Ariana Moorer finishing with 23 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists in a spectacular triple-double. Tiana Mangakahia did all she could for the Wizards with 38 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

It was then a thumping 119-54 win on the road for the Cairns Dolphins against the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

The big three of the Dolphins were remarkable with Cayla George finishing with 38 points, 21 rebounds and 11 assists, Teyahna Bond 28 points and six assists, and Penina Davidson 27 points, 19 rebounds and six assists.

Round 10 in the NBL1 North Women's competition continues on Saturday evening with the Brisbane Capitals playing the Townsville Flames while the Gold Coast Rollers take on the Southern Districts Spartans and USC Rip City face the Cairns Dolphins.

Logan Thunder is also at home to the Sunshine Coast Phoenix while the Darwin Salties host the Rockhampton Cyclones and the North Coast Seahawks face the Red City Roar.

The round action then wraps up on Sunday with the Ipswich Force hosting the Logan Thunder while the Northside Wizards play host to the Townsville Flames.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS 64 lost to TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 77

The Townsville Flames had to come from behind at half-time to produce a tremendous second half to begin their triple-header road trip weekend with a 13-point win against the Southern Districts Spartans.

The Spartans were at home to the Flames at Rowland Cowan Stadium and the hosts started impressively to go on an 8-0 run and lead by that margin during the first quarter, and still being up 20-18 by quarter-time.

Southern Districts managed to go back out to an eight-point advantage during the second period and were still on top of Townsville 42-38 at the long break.

If the Flames wanted to start their big weekend on the road they needed to respond and they did come out strongly to start the second half including scoring 12 straight points to grab the lead.

Townsville continued on with it from there to end up leading by as much as 18 points in the fourth term before winning 77-64.

The win improves Townsville to an 8-3 record on the season with road games still to come this weekend against the Gold Coast Rollers and Northside Wizards. The Spartans are now 9-2 following just their second loss of 2022.

Steph Reid continued her tremendous form for the Flames with 23 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals with Jaimee Seebohm adding 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Courtney Woods also had 13 points and six rebounds, Alanna Smith 13 points and six boards, and Grace Rodgers eight points.

Leah Scott battled hard for Southern Districts finishing with 23 points and 11 rebounds with Madelyn Allen contributing 15 points, six boards, four assists and two steals, Kalani Purcell seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Nadeen Payne seven points.

 

SOUTH WEST METRO PIRATES 87 lost to ROCKHAMPTON CYCLONES 94

The Rockhampton Cyclones ended up producing a standout overtime period to score a seven-point win against the South West Metro Pirates on the road on Friday night.

The Pirates were at home to the Cyclones at Hibiscus Sports Stadium but it was the visiting Rockhampton who started on fire scoring 12 straight points to open up an early 13-point edge.

The Cyclones saw their lead grow out to 17 points during the second period and they were still in control leading 43-26 by the half-time interval.

The Pirates began to work their way back into it during the third quarter to outscore the Cyclones 26 points to 19 to cut the margin back to 10 at three quarter-time.

South West then scored 16 points in-a-row during the fourth quarter to grab the lead but with five minutes to play the Cyclones were still up five after a Heidi Freeburn three-pointer.

However, three minutes later and scores were level with a Cat MacGregor triple for the home team, and then she nailed another massive shot with time expiring to brings scores back equal and force the game into overtime.

However, it was all Rockhampton in the overtime period as the visitors outscored the Pirates 13 points to six to end up winning 94-87 after a tremendous contest.

Lara McSpadden produced a massive performance for Rockhampton with 21 points, 20 rebounds and five assists on the back of shooting 10/17 from the field.

Heidi Freeburn added 19 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Cyclones, Sara Storeshaw 19 points, three boards, three assists and two steals, and Jannon Otto 18 points and nine rebounds.

Cat MacGregor finished with 27 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists for South West while connecting on 6/14 from three-point range.

Bride Kennedy-Hopoate added 19 points, Paige Price 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Alana Fraser 10 points, five assists and four steals.

 

RED CITY ROAR 95 defeated NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 80

The Red City Roar put together a strong showing at home on Friday night to beat the Northside Wizards by 15 points.

The Roar played host to the Wizards at Paul Bancroft Centre to open Round 10 in the NBL1 North and they gradually worked their way on top.

Red City opened up a three-point lead by quarter-time and their advantage grew to 11 points during the second term on the way to going on a run of scoring seven straight points.

That lead got out to 13 points in the third quarter before another 7-0 run in the fourth saw the Roar up 21 before settling with the 95-80 victory on their home court.

Red City ended up pulling down 48 rebounds to 35 for the game to go with 19 at the offensive end to nine which helped them take 10 extra field goals and to take eight more free-throws.

Jaylen Cooper had a first-class night for the Roar finishing with 28 points and five rebounds while nailing 6/10 from three-point territory.

Ariana Moorer contributed 23 points, 18 rebounds, 11 assists and four steals in a stunning triple-double performance while Emily Preston added 11 points and seven rebounds, Myka Arthur 10 points, three boards and three assists, and Lily Sarra 10 points.

Sydney Uni Flames WNBL signing Tiana Mangakahia continued her remarkable recent form for the Wizards with another 38 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists on 13/30 shooting from the floor, 4/14 from downtown and 8/9 from the charity stripe.

Kelsey McDermott added 15 points and four rebounds, and Caitlin Cunningham 10 points and five boards.

 

SUNSHINE COAST PHOENIX 54 lost to CAIRNS DOLPHINS 119

The big three of the Cairns Dolphins put on quite the show on Friday night in their eventual 65-point rout on the road of the Sunshine Coast Phoenix.

Even though Sunshine Coast was at home at Maroochydore Stadium it didn’t take long for Cairns to work their way on top on the back of a couple of big early shots from Cayla George.

The Dolphins scored 10 consecutive points in the first quarter to end up going into quarter-time leading 24-9.

Another 11-0 run in the second period saw the Dolphins' lead grow to as much as 30 points and they were still leading 50-20 by half-time.

It was more of the same in the third quarter with 15 straight points seeing Cairns' advantage balloon to as much as 53 points, it got out to 69 in the fourth and the Dolphins ended up winning 119-54.

The big road win improved Cairns to a 7-4 record on the season while Sunshine Coast is now 1-11.

It was an incredible dominance from the Dolphins on the boards as they collected 74 rebounds to 30 including 26 at the offensive end to 10. 

Cairns ended up shooting 51.2 per cent from the field and hit 15/34 from three-point land compared to Sunshine Coast going at 26.6 per cent and then 5/20 from downtown.

Cayla George had a remarkable night for Cairns with 38 points, 21 rebounds, 11 assists, four steals and four blocked shots while shooting 12/21 from the field, 8/13 from deep and 6/6 at the free-throw line.

Teyahna Bond also produced 28 points and six assists for the Dolphins, Penina Davidson 27 points, 19 rebounds and six assists while Alessandra Burke contributed eight points and seven assists, and Amy Lewis seven points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Amy Browne was the only Sunshine Coast player to reach double-figures with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
