NBL1 North Recap | Saturday Women's Round 8

As Round 8 in the NBL1 North Women's season continued on Saturday night, there were victories for the Southern Districts Spartans, Ipswich Force, Rockhampton Cyclones, North Gold Coast Seahawks and Gold Coast Rollers.
Round 8 in the NBL1 North began back on Friday night with the Logan Thunder remaining undefeated with a 94-78 win against the North Gold Coast Seahawks.
The Cairns Dolphins also beat the Darwin Salties 94-49 and the Mackay Meteorettes enjoyed their homecoming beating the Townsville Flames 77-70.
That led into the Saturday evening match ups beginning with the Southern Districts Spartans defeating the Brisbane Capitals 102-73.
Nadeen Payne put up 32 points and nine rebounds in the big win for the Spartans with Leah Scott adding 24 points and 10 boards. Madison Woodford top scored for Brisbane with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
It was an impressive performance at home from the Ipswich Force who defeated the Northside Wizards 101-75.
Amanda Cahill delivered 31 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the win for the Force while Tiana Mangakahia was remarkable in the loss for the Wizards with 45 points.
The Rockhampton Cyclones were back on their home floor and defeated the Townsville Flames 93-79 on Saturday evening.
Annaliese Watkinson produced 28 points with seven triples for the Cyclones in the win while Lara McSpadden contributed 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Courtney Woods put up 31 points for the Flames.
The North Gold Coast Seahawks bounced back from their Friday night loss to beat the South West Metro Pirates 73-62.
Zoe Crawford top scored for the Seahawks with 14 points with Erin Riley contributing 13 points and 12 rebounds while Steph Bairstow put up 19 points for the Pirates.
The Gold Coast Rollers snapped their losing slide at home on Saturday night as well defeating the Red City Roar 86-72.
Lauren Mansfield and Angela Lou Beadle both finished with 20 points in the win for Gold Coast while Ariana Moorer put up 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Roar.
Round 8 in the NBL1 North Women's competition will now wrap up with two more games on Sunday with the Red City Roar hosting the Brisbane Capitals, and the Sunshine Coast Phoenix taking on the Ipswich Force.

BRISBANE CAPITALS 73 lost to SOUTHERN DISTRICTS SPARTANS 102
The Southern Districts Spartans continued their standout form so far this NBL1 North season beating the Brisbane Capitals on the road by 29 points on Saturday night.
The Capitals were at home to the Spartans on Saturday night at Auchenflower Stadium but it was Southern Districts who started strongly with 27 points to 15 in the opening quarter.
While Brisbane did fight hard to get back into the contest with 26 points to 21 in the second quarter, the Spartans pulled away in the second half to show their quality.
Southern Districts scored 24 points to 15 in the third quarter and another 30 points to 17 in the fourth term to end up winning 102-73.
The victory improves the Spartans to an 8-1 record on the season while the Capitals are now 6-4 following the defeat.
Nadeen Payne showed her quality in the win for Southern Districts finishing the night with 32 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals while shooting 12/14 from the floor, 2/2 from downtown and 6/6 from the foul line.
Leah Scott added 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Spartans, Lil Dart 14 points, Nat Taylor 12 points, and Maddie Allen 12 points, eight assists and three rebounds.
Madison Woodford ended up top-scoring for Brisbane with 17 points and nine rebounds with Bronte Corke 15 points and four boards, Abby Cubillo 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, Steph Collins 12 points and five boards, and Courtney Middap 12 points and four rebounds.
IPSWICH FORCE 101 defeated NORTHSIDE WIZARDS 75
The Ipswich Force recorded their second win of the NBL1 North season on Saturday night and did it at home in style beating the Northside Wizards by 26 points.
The Force came into the clash against the Wizards with just the one win on the board so far this season, but at JBS Stadium they were able to take full advantage of a Northside team minus Shyla Heal and Caitlin Cunningham.
Ipswich started strongly with 27 points to 17 on the back of a 12-0 run before leading by as much as 17 during the second term and holding a 50-35 half-time edge.
The Force were able to complete the job to end up winning 101-75 on their home floor to improve to 2-8 on the season while the Wizards are now 6-2 following just their second loss of the 2022 season.
Ipswich pulled down 49 rebounds to 33 for the night including 14 offensive boards to seven while shooting 50.0 per cent from the field and hitting 12/38 from three. Northside managed just 37.1 per cent shooting and 5/23 from downtown.
Amanda Cahill was tremendous all evening for Ipswich finishing with 31 points, seven rebounds and three assists on 13/19 shooting.
Tia Hay added 20 points and four assists, Kasey Burton 19 points, seven boards and four assists, and Brianna Rollerson 15 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Tiana Mangakahia stepped up huge for the Wizards but ultimately just didn’t get enough support. She produced 45 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists on 14/26 shooting from the floor and 16/20 at the charity stripe.
Alice O'Driscoll added 12 points and six rebounds, and Hayley Cotter eight points.
ROCKHAMPTON CYCLONES 93 defeated TOWNSVILLE FLAMES 79
The Rockhampton Cyclones were back on their home floor and took advantage to beat the Townsville Flames by 13 points on Saturday night.
The Flames didn’t have the services of WNBL veteran Mia Murray and while Alanna Smith was with the team on the back of her WNBA stint she didn’t suit up, and Rockhampton was able to take toll at Bravus Arena.
The Cyclones already led by 10 points after the first quarter before leading by 14 at half-time on the back of 19 points to 15 in the second period.
Rockhampton was able to stretch its lead to as much as 20 points in the third period, and then consolidated that for the eventual 93-79 victory.
The win improves the Cyclones to a 4-6 record on the season to keep them in touch with the top eight while the Flames slip to 6-3 with the defeat but with some first-rate players to shortly come into the line-up.
It was a first-class shooting performance in the win from Rockhampton who went at 55.6 per cent from the floor opposed to 43.2 per cent from Townsville.
Annaliese Watkinson was tremendous for Rockhampton knocking down 7/9 from three-point range on the way to 28 points.
Lara McSpadden added 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, Sara Storeshaw 12 points and four assists, Jannon Otto 18 points, seven boards and four assists, and Madison Torresin 10 points and six assists.
Courtney Woods delivered 31 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for the shorthanded Flames with Steph Reid adding 24 points, seven boards and seven assists, and Jaimee Seebohm 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
SOUTH WEST METRO PIRATES 62 lost to NORTH GOLD COAST SEAHAWKS 73
The North Gold Coast Seahawks got rolling in the third quarter to set up an eventual 11-point road win on Saturday night against the South West Metro Pirates.
The Seahawks opened their weekend on the road with a loss to the unbeaten Logan Thunder on Friday night ahead of their visit to Hibiscus Sports Stadium to play the Pirates on Saturday evening.
North Gold Coast started well to lead by as much as nine points during the first period on the back of a 7-0 run before being up 25-21 by quarter-time.
The Seahawks marginally improved their lead to 17-15 by half-time but then blew the game open in the third quarter on the back of scoring 11 straight points.
That saw the lead for North Gold Coast grow to 16 points during the third period and then as much as 18 in the fourth on the way to the eventual 73-62 victory.
The result improves the Seahawks to a 6-4 record on the season while the Pirates are now 0-9 and still chasing that elusive first victory of 2022.
North Gold Coast dominated on the glass with 47 rebounds to 29 for the game including 17 offensive boards to nine.
Zoe Crawford top-scored for the Seahawks in 22 minutes off the bench with 14 points on 3/6 shooting from three-point land.
Isalys Quinones finished with 13 points and five rebounds for North Gold Coast, Erin Riley 13 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists, Lauren Jansen 11 points, eight boards, five steals and three assists, and Katelyn Donovan seven points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Steph Bairstow produced 19 points, six rebounds and three assists for South West with Cat MacGregor adding 15 points and three assists, and Bride Kennedy-Hopoate 16 points and four rebounds.
GOLD COAST ROLLERS 86 defeated RED CITY ROAR 72
The Gold Coast Rollers got back on the winning list to the tune of 14 points at home to the Red City Roar on Saturday night.
After starting the season winning their opening four matches, Gold Coast had lost five in-a-row coming into Saturday's contest against Red City at Carrara Stadium.
That had the pressure on Gold Coast to stop that losing slide on their home court but that became an even more significant challenge when the Roar started strongly with 26 points to 17 in the opening quarter.
Red City's lead grew to 10 points early in the second quarter as well but Gold Coast was able to turn the tide by going on a 12-0 run to grab the lead and head into the half-time break leading 46-43.
The Rollers were able to keep that momentum going throughout the second half to lead by as much as 12 points in third period, and then 19 in the fourth on the way to the eventual 86-72 victory.
The win snaps that five-game losing streak for the Rollers to improve them to a 5-5 record on the season while the loss sees Red City slip to 2-5.
Lauren Mansfield delivered 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Gold Coast while hitting 4/11 from three-point territory with Angela Lou Beadle putting up 20 points and 11 boards on the back of 6/10 shooting and 8/9 at the foul line.
Lilly Rotunno added nine points for the Rollers, Nyah Morris eight points and four rebounds, Sarah Ambrose eight points and six assists, Sophie Johnston seven points, and Jade Peacock seven points.
Ariana Moorer had a big performance for Red City with 26 points and 11 rebounds with Mia Lloyd contributing 15 points and 10 boards, and Jaylen Cooper 11 points and four rebounds.
