NBL1 NORTH – 2022 SEASON
ROUND 9 – SUNDAY

WOMEN
BRISBANE CAPITALS 87 defeated DARWIN SALTIES 74

The Darwin Salties fought valiantly in their third road game of the weekend but couldn’t quite overcome the Brisbane Capitals in Sunday's NBL1 North Women's match up.

The Capitals were playing their only game of Round 9 while the Salties Women had already lost to the Northside Wizards by 56 points on Friday and to the Southern Districts Spartans by 39 points on Saturday.

The Salties then flew out of the blocks to lead 7-2 and 10-4 early on to lift hopes of them scoring their fourth win of the season, but Brisbane soon settled.

The Capitals would end up scoring 11 straight points to lead by 12 at quarter-time and then that advantage grew to 20 during the second period.

To the credit of the Salties they kept fighting despite the 15-point deficit at the half. Brisbane made sure of the win by opening up a 28-point lead late in the contest but Darwin weren’t quite ready to jump on the plane yet.

The visitors scored 15 straight points but still Brisbane scored the 87-74 victory to improve to 8-4 on the season while the Salties are now 3-8 on the back of losing all three games this weekend by a total of 108 points.

Bronte Corke ended up top-scoring for Brisbane with 23 points while knocking down 5/9 from three-point land while Abby Cubillo starred with a triple-double made up of 13 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds.

Steph Collins added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Capitals, Courtney Middap 12 points with four three-pointers, and Anna Cameron 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Chelsea Brook fought valiantly once more for Darwin to end the road trip with 26 points while hitting 4/6 from three-point territory.

Lauren Heard added 13 points and six assists, Ruby Porter 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, Teyla Evans 11 points and 12 boards, and Serena Waters eight points, three boards and two steals.

MEN
BRISBANE CAPITALS 100 defeated DARWIN SALTIES 77

The Darwin Salties Men might have run out of gas on Sunday but in fairness, the Brisbane Capitals were impressive in their eventual 23-point victory.

The Capitals hosted the Salties at Auchenflower Stadium on Sunday afternoon with Brisbane playing their only game of the weekend while Darwin were playing their third having beaten the Northside Wizards on Friday and Southern Districts Spartans on Saturday.

Brisbane started impressively to make the job harder for the Salties to have to come from behind on tired legs if they were to return home with the perfect triple-header weekend.

The Capitals went on a 13-0 run in the opening quarter and were leading by as much as 15 before leading 26-17 by quarter-time.

Brisbane's lead grew to 18 points in the second term and the home side was leading 47-32 heading into half-time.

There would be no serious comeback from the Salties in the second half with the Capitals continuing to extend their lead to end up winning 100-77.

The victory improves Brisbane to a 6-6 record on the season while the Salties are now 8-3 after going 2-1 this weekend.

Atem Bior finished with 21 points, five rebounds and three assists in the win for the Capitals on 10/16 shooting while Illawarra Hawks NBL guard Lachie Dent top-scored with 24 points, six assists and four rebounds on 5/9 shooting from three-point territory.

Max Mackinnon added 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals with Ben Wilson contributing 10 points and four rebounds, and Ben Volkman 10 points, eight boards and five blocked shots.

Makuach Maluach produced 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals for Darwin with Jerron Jamerson finishing with 18 points and six boards, Tad Dufelmeier 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, and Ben Wright eight points.
