NBL1 South Recap | Saturday Men's Round 10

NBL1 South Round 10 got underway back on Wednesday night with the Melbourne Tigers claiming a thriller 77-75 against the Ringwood Hawks.

Then on Friday night, the Bendigo Braves defeated the Geelong Supercats 79-71 while the Hobart Chargers beat the Dandenong Rangers 107-80 and the Ringwood Hawks prevailed 84-79 against the Waverley Falcons.

That led into the Saturday night action in the NBL1 South which saw the Frankston Blues win at home 89-83 against the Nunawading Spectres.

Adrio Bailey put up 26 points and 10 rebounds for Frankston and Dillon Stith 22 points. Despite the loss, CJ Ascuncion-Byrd was outstanding for the Spectres.

The Sandringham Sabres were also impressive in defeating the Geelong Supercats 93-81 on their home floor on Saturday night.

Fresh off representing their country, Shea Ili put up 29 points and six assists for Sandringham, Dion Prewster 26 points and 12 boards, and Tohi Smith-Milner 15 points. Gabe Hadley put up 28 points and six rebounds for the Supercats.

The Knox Raiders proved too strong at home for the Ballarat Miners coming away with the 81-62 victory.

Adam Gibson and Alex Robinson both delivered 23 points for the Raiders in the victory while Preston Bungei top-scored for Ballarat with 12 points.

The North West Tasmania Thunder were back on their home floor on Saturday night and produced a 92-67 victory against the Dandenong Rangers.

Fabijan Krslovic put up 23 points and 15 rebounds in a commanding performance for the Thunder with Deng Puoch finishing with 15 points and nine boards for the Rangers.

The Casey Cavaliers took full advantage of a Diamond Valley Eagles team without DJ Vasiljevic on Saturday night to score a commanding 111-81 victory away from home.

Jordan Bell delivered 33 points and 14 rebounds in the win for the Cavaliers while Ngor Manyang put up 27 points for Diamond Valley.

It was a tight affair at Keilor Stadium with the Keilor Thunder defeating the Kilsyth Cobras 87-82.

Cirkook Riak produced 22 points and 6/11 from three-point range shooting for Keilor while Adrian Tomada fought hard for Kilsyth with 20 points.

It was a tremendous tussle all evening at The Ice House and it was the Eltham Wildcats ending up prevailing away from home to beat the Mount Gambier Pioneers 100-95.

Owen Foxwell re-signed with South East Melbourne Phoenix during the week and he put up 33 points with four threes for the Wildcats in the win on the road. Nick Marshall finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.

Round 10 in the NBL1 South will now conclude on Sunday afternoon at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre with the Melbourne Tigers at home to the Diamond Valley Eagles.

SANDRINGHAM SABRES 93 defeated GEELONG SUPERCATS 81

The Sandringham Sabres continued a rough patch for the Geelong Supercats with a 12-point victory at home on Saturday night.

The Sabres played host to the Supercats at Southern Basketball Stadium with Geelong coming off a Friday night defeat at home to the Bendigo Braves.

Sandringham did manage to open up a seven-point lead during the first quarter but Geelong hit back and cut the deficit to just a point by quarter-time.

The Sabres again pulled away a little further during the second term outscoring the Supercats 25 points to 20 to end up leading 49-43 by half-time.

The Supercats managed to be within four points at three quarter-time, but the Sabres had all the answers on this night and dominated the last term with 24 points to 16 to end up winning 93-81.

The win improves Sandringham to a 9-5 record on the season after Round 10 while another loss to the Supercats sees them slip to 8-5.

Shea Ili, Tohi Smith-Milner and Dion Prewster were all fresh off playing for the New Zealand Tall Black in a World Cup Asian Qualifier on Thursday night, and led the charge 48 hours later for the Sabres.

Ili finished the night with 29 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals while Prewster added 26 points and 12 boards, and Smith-Milner 15 points.

Dave Barlow also had seven points and five rebounds for Sandringham, Campbell Blogg seven points and three steals, and Nick Gabsch seven points.

Gabe Hadley finished the night with 28 points and six rebounds for Geelong while shooting 6/14 from beyond the arc with Isaac Turner adding 15 points and three boards, Owen Odigie 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Demarcus Gatlin 11 points, eight boards and five assists.

 

KNOX RAIDERS 81 defeated BALLARAT MINERS 62

The Knox Raiders proved too strong for the Ballarat Miners on Saturday night with a 19-point victory at home.

The Raiders took on the Miners at the State Basketball Centre and it was a tight first quarter with scores level at 14-14 by the end of one.

Knox were able to pull away, however, in the second quarter scoring 10 straight points to open up a 15-point advantage and to be leading 42-29 by the half-time break.

The Raiders maintained their advantage throughout the second half and the final 19-point margin was the biggest of the game as they ended up winning 81-62.

The victory sees Knox improve to an 8-6 record on the season after Round 10 while Ballarat joins them now on 8-6 following the defeat.

Alex Robinson produced 23 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Raiders on 10/16 shooting from the floor and a perfect 2/2 from downtown.

Adam Gibson used all 460 games of his NBL experience for 23 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists as well for Knox while draining 5/9 from three-point land.

Dylan Hare added 13 points and five rebounds, Bailey Nunn seven points and two assists, and Austin Shelley seven points and two steals.

Preston Bungei top-scored for Ballarat with 12 points to go with four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Jalon Miller added 11 points and nine rebounds, Deng Gak nine points and six boards, Koen Sapwell nine points and four rebounds, and Zack Dunmore eight points. 

 

DIAMOND VALLEY EAGLES 81 lost to CASEY CAVALIERS 111

The Casey Cavaliers took full toll on DJ Vasiljevic not being there for the Diamond Valley Eagles to come away with the 30-point win on the road on Saturday night.

Casey made the trip to Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night, but it was the Eagles who started impressively going on a 7-0 run to end up leading 24-14 after one.

It was a stunning turnaround in the second quarter from the Cavaliers as they piled on 33 points to 15 and that saw the visitors end up leading 47-39 by the half-time break.

The Cavs continued that momentum in the third quarter as they went on an 11-0 run to lead by 21 points and to be in control against Diamond Valley leading 78-62 by three quarter-time.

The Cavaliers closed the deal with another 33 points to 19 in the fourth quarter to end up winning 111-81 to improve to 4-9 on the season while Diamond Valley slips to 7-7.

Casey dominated on the glass with 50 rebounds to 31 from Diamond Valley including 21 at the offensive end to eight which helped them take 19 extra field goals for the night.

Jordan Bell was the star of the evening for the Cavaliers finishing with 33 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and two steals with Davo Hickey contributing 20 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

Matt Donlan added 19 points for Casey, Nathan Frost 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Anthony Williams nine points, five assists and four boards.

Ngor Manyang has made the move to NBL1 South this season after being a championship winner with the Warwick Senators out west and he put up 27 points, three rebounds and two assists for Diamond Valley.

BJ Symons added 11 points and seven rebounds, Joel Capetola 10 points and two boards, and Mark Scherf nine points and three rebounds.

 

KEILOR THUNDER 87 defeated KILSYTH COBRAS 82

The Keilor Thunder won a tight battle with the Kilsyth Cobras by five points on their home court on Saturday night.

The Thunder hosted the Cobras at Keilor Stadium and it was a tight affair most of the evening. Keilor did lead by as much as seven during the first quarter but by quarter-time the advantage was just 18-15.

The Thunder stretched their lead out to double-figures during the second term and by half-time they were on top 42-34.

Kilsyth fired back in the third quarter, though, outscoring the Thunder 25 points to 20 to be just three points behind by three quarter-time.

However, Keilor managed to respond and pull away once more during the final term with another 25 points to 23 and led by as much as 12 at one stage, and ended up winning 87-82.

The victory improves Keilor to a 3-10 record on the season after Round 10 while Kilsyth is now 8-6 following the defeat.

It was a terrific shooting performance in the win from Keilor as they went at 50 per cent from the field and nailed 13/33 from downtown at 39.4 per cent along with hitting all 10 of their free-throws.

Kilsyth ended up shooting at 43.2 per cent from the field, 21,9 per cent from beyond the arc and 11/14 at the charity stripe. 

Cirkook Riak finished with 22 points and four rebounds with six threes in the win for the Thunder while Tyler Kidd added 15 points and five assists, Jacob Lampkin 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Rhyss Lewis nine points.

Adrian Tomada finished with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists for Kilsyth with Deng Deng contributing 16 points and 15 boards, Mitch Dielemans 16 points on 4/6 shooting from deep, and Corey Jeffs 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.

 

NORTH WEST TASMANIA THUNDER 92 defeated DANDENONG RANGERS 67

The North West Tasmania Thunder produced a strong showing to end up beating the Dandenong Rangers by 25 points at home on Saturday night.

The Thunder played host to the Rangers at Ulverstone Sports and Leisure Centre and they started well on their home floor to end up leading 20-16 by the end of one.

North West were able to pull away further in the second quarter with another 24 points to 15 which saw them in control 44-31 at the half-time interval.

It was more of the same in the second half with the Thunder lead growing to 23 points in the third quarter, 29 in the fourth and they ended up winning 92-67 from there.

The victory improves North West to a 6-7 record on the season following Round 10 while Dandenong is now 4-10 following the defeat.

It was a stunning three-point shooting performance in the win from the Thunder as they went 19/37 from beyond the arc as a team at 51.4 per cent. The Rangers ended up going 4/17 at 23.5 per cent.

Tasmania JackJumpers NBL big man Fabijan Krslovic was a dominant force in the win for North West with 23 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots while connecting on 4/5 from downtown.

Ben Woolley added 22 points on 6/8 shooting from downtown with Sean Macdonald adding 17 points, four rebounds and three steals, Joel Beveridge 12 points and two assists on top of hitting all four of his three-point attempts.

Matt Kenyon also finished with eight points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three blocked shots.

Deng Puoch finished with 15 points and nine rebounds for Dandenong with Dyson-King Hawea contributing 14 points and five assists, Lawson Eales 12 points and eight rebounds, and Ellis Biggar nine points.

 

MOUNT GAMBIER PIONEERS 95 lost to ELTHAM WILDCATS 100

The Eltham Wildcats hit the road and came away with a tremendous and thrilling five-point win against the Mount Gambier Pioneers on Saturday night.

The Pioneers were back on their home court at The Ice House hosting the Wildcats in what turned out to be a terrific contest.

The Wildcats started strongly away from home to lead 19-12 by quarter-time before they led by as much as nine points in the second term, and they still held on to a 41-37 advantage at the main break.

Eltham was able to pull away again during the third quarter opening up an 11-point lead after scoring 10 straight points, and they were still on top 67-58.

It was quite the explosive fourth term from both teams with Mount Gambier giving themselves a chance by putting up 37 points, but Eltham held firm with 33 points of their own to hold on for the 100-95 victory.

The result improves Eltham to the 3-10 record on the season in what was their best win of 2022 against a Pioneers team who are now 10-3 but still on top of the standings.

Both teams had particularly effective nights from beyond the arc with Eltham connecting on 11/25 at 44.0 per cent with Mount Gambier hitting 15/33 at 45.5 per cent.

Owen Foxwell produced a standout performance for the Wildcats after confirming his stay in the NBL at the South East Melbourne Phoenix. He finished with 33 points and five rebounds including shooting 4/7 from three-point range.

Mitch Dance added 18 points and eight rebounds, Josh Sykes 13 points and six boards, Ovie Magbegor nine points and nine rebounds, and Noah Todd eight points and three boards.

Tom Kubank finished with 23 points and eight rebounds for Mount Gambier with Nick Marshall adding 23 points and 11 boards, Tom Daly 20 points and five assists, Jordan Rawls 11 points and six rebounds, and Erik Burdon 10 points.

 

FRANKSTON BLUES 89 defeated NUNAWADING SPECTRES 83

A massive second quarter ended up setting the tone for a narrow Frankston Blues win at home against the Nunawading Spectres on Saturday night.

The Blues played host to the Spectres at Frankston Basketball Stadium with Nunawading starting strongly away from home with 26 points to 19 in the opening quarter on the back of scoring 10 consecutive points.

Frankston were able to turn things around in the second term going on a run of 10 straight points of their own. The Blues ended up putting up 35 points for the quarter to go into the half-time break leading 54-49.

The Blues extended that advantage to nine points in the third quarter and then 11 in the fourth before holding out for the eventual 89-83 victory on their home court.

The win improves Frankston to an 8-5 record on the season while Nunawading has fallen to a 6-8 record following the defeat.

Adrio Bailey ended up scoring 26 points to go with 10 rebounds for the Blues while Dillon Stith finished with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Igor Hadziomerovic contributed 15 points and six rebounds, Lachlan Barker nine points, four boards and three assists, and Daniel Trist six points and four boards in just 15 minutes.

CJ Asuncion-Byrd delivered a standout performance from Nunawading with 39 points on 14/22 shooting from the floor and 9/14 from three-point territory.

Jack Gandolfo added 19 points and Dain Swetalla nine points and 10 rebounds.
