NBL1 South Recap | Saturday Women's Round 10

Sarah Elsworthy, Monique Conti, Klara Wischer, Monique Andriuolo, Keely Froling, Monique Andriuolo and Alice Kunek were among the stars to deliver match-winning displays in Saturday night of the NBL1 South.

In the end, there were Saturday night wins for the Geelong Supercats, Knox Raiders, Casey Cavaliers, Keilor Thunder, Launceston Tornadoes, Mount Gambier Pioneers and Nunawading Spectres.

NBL1 South Round 10 got underway back on Wednesday night with the Ringwood Hawks defeating the Melbourne Tigers 71-47.

Then on Friday night, the Bendigo Braves defeated the Geelong Supercats 92-70 while the Hobart Chargers beat the Dandenong Rangers 77-64 and the Ringwood Hawks prevailed 85-55 against the Waverley Falcons.

That led into the Saturday night action in the NBL1 South starting with the Geelong Supercats defeating the Sandringham Sabres 87-72.

Sarah Elsworthy finished with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists for Geelong with Taylah Simmons adding 18 points and nine boards. Brittany Smart put up 24 points and nine boards for Sandringham.

It was a cracking overtime contest at the State Basketball Centre with the Knox Raiders ending up beating the Ballarat Miners 84-81.

Klara Wischer delivered another 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Knox with Alicia Froling adding 20 points and 15 boards while Zitina Aokuso delivered 32 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Ballarat.

The Casey Cavaliers put together a strong showing on the road to come away with an 85-71 victory against the Diamond Valley Eagles.

Monique Conti put together 24 points, five rebounds and five assists on five three-pointers for the Cavs while Kate Oliver top-scored for Diamond Valley with 24 points along with 13 rebounds.

Keilor Thunder overcame a slow start on Saturday night at home to end up beating the Kilsyth Cobras 85-80.

Monique Andriuolo finished with 21 points and seven rebounds in the win for Keilor while Lauren Scherf delivered 29 points and 19 rebounds for Kilsyth.

The Launceston Tornadoes were back on their home floor on Saturday night and delivered a 91-65 victory against the Dandenong Rangers.

Marianna Tolo hit the floor for the Tornadoes and had 18 points and six assists while Keely Froling had 25 points and 20 rebounds, and Mariah Payne 24 points. Clare Camac scored 17 points for Dandenong.

It was a heartstopper at The Ice House and the Mount Gambier Pioneers thrilled their home fans with the 75-73 victory against the Eltham Wildcats.

Shakera Reilly delivered 17 points, four rebounds and three assists for Mount Gambier with Hailey Leidel delivering 28 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats.

It was another tight affair at Frankston Basketball Stadium with the Nunawading Spectres ending up defeating the Frankston Blues 66-63.

Alice Kunek delivered 23 points and six rebounds in the win for Nunawading while Darcee Garbin produced 29 points and 12 boards for Frankston.

Round 10 in the NBL1 South will now conclude on Sunday afternoon at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre with the Melbourne Tigers at home to the Diamond Valley Eagles.

SANDRINGHAM SABRES 72 lost to GEELONG SUPERCATS 87

The Geelong Supercats hit back from a loss the previous night to beat the Sandringham Sabres on the road by 15 points on Saturday night.

The Supercats headed to Southern Basketball Stadium on Saturday night to take on the Sabres looking to bounce back from a defeat at the hands of the Bendigo Braves on Friday evening on their home floor.

While the Supercats did race out to a 10-point lead in the first term, by quarter-time scores were all square at 21-21.

Geelong asserted its control in the second term, though, with the visitors scoring nine straight points and then leading by as much as 16 points before heading into the half-time break leading 44-31.

Sandringham stayed in touch by outscoring Geelong 21 points to 16 in the third quarter, but the Supercats guaranteed the victory with 27 points to 20 in the fourth term to end up winning 87-72.

The victory improves the Supercats to a 9-4 record on the season having split their two games this weekend while the Sabres are now 6-8.

It was an impressive offensive performance from Geelong as they shot 52.9 per cent as a team to make up for their 19 turnovers while the Sabres shot at just 38.2 per cent and had 20 turnovers themselves.

Sarah Elsworthy delivered 23 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Supercats while Taylah Simmons finished with 18 points and nine boards, Sara Blicavs 15 points, six rebounds and four assists, Alex Duck 11 points, six assists and five boards, and Eve Braslis 10 points and nine rebounds.

Brittany Smart produced 24 points, nine rebounds and five steals for Sandringham with Funda Nakkasoglu contributing 21 points.

 

KNOX RAIDERS 84 defeated BALLARAT MINERS 81

It was an overtime heartstopper between the Knox Raiders and Ballarat Miners on Saturday night.

The Raiders hosted the Miners at the State Basketball Centre with the visitors from Ballarat leading 20-17 by the end of the first quarter.

Things remained tight with Knox outscoring Ballarat 23 points to 21 in the second term to head into the half-time break trailing by just the point.

The Raiders worked their way on top during the third quarter with 16 points to 10, but the Miners turned things back around with 18 points to 13 in the fourth term with the game going to overtime on the back of the tying three-pointer for the Raiders from Kara Tessari.

Then in the extra period, it remained a one possession game until Kiera Rowe connected from deep for the Raiders. 

Klara Wischer connected on another three soon after to keep the Raiders on top before the experienced Wischer drained a couple of free-throws to seal the deal with the 84-81 victory for the Raiders.

Wischer ended the night with an impressive 27 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Raiders while shooting 10/18 from the field, 3/5 from three-point range and 4/6 from the free-throw line.

Alicia Froling added 20 points and 15 rebounds for Knox, Leah Santomaggio 12 points and five boards, Kiera Rowe nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Kara Tessari nine points, seven assists and five boards.

Zitina Aokuso had a monster performance for Ballarat with 32 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots with Jade Melbourne contributing 22 points, eight boards and four assists, and Charlotte Brancatisano 11 points and five rebounds.

 

DIAMOND VALLEY EAGLES 71 lost to CASEY CAVALIERS 85

The Casey Cavaliers started on fire and converted that into an eventual 14-point win on the road to the Diamond Valley Eagles.

The Eagles were back home at Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre but it was a rough start for the home team with the Cavs starting strongly racing to a 32-18 advantage by the end of the opening quarter.

However, Diamond Valley responded well to make a game of it with 22 points to 12 in the second quarter to be only trailing by four points heading into the half-time break.

Casey pulled away further leading by as much as 16 points in the third quarter and going into three quarter-time with a 65-56 advantage.

The Cavaliers guaranteed themselves of the victory with 20 points to 15 in the fourth quarter to lead at one stage by as much as 22 points before going on to score the 85-71 victory.

The result improves Casey to a 7-6 record on the season while the Eagles fall to 1-12 as a result of the defeat.

Monique Conti ended up leading the charge in the win for the Cavaliers with 24 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals while hitting 5/12 from the land of plenty.

Rachel Bell added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Cavs, Louise Brown 14 points and 10 boards, Sarah Boothe 12 points and three assists, Hailey Merrigan nine points and eight rebounds, and Taylah Giliam nine points, six boards and six assists.

Kate Oliver finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds for Diamond Valley with Jade Dunne contributing 17 points and three assists, and Emma Mahady 13 points, five boards, five assists and three steals.

 

KEILOR THUNDER 85 defeated KILSYTH COBRAS 80

The Keilor Thunder overcame a slow start to end up overcoming the Kilsyth Cobras for a five-point victory on their home floor on Saturday night.

The Thunder were at home at Keilor Stadium but it was the visiting Cobras who started the better going on a 10-0 run in the opening quarter to end up leading 21-12 by quarter-time.

Another 10 straight points during the second period saw Kilsyth open up a 20-point advantage but the Thunder did stay in touch to cut the Cobras lead to 49-36 by the half-time break.

Keilor kept that momentum rolling into the third quarter with 24 points to 17, and the Thunder kept the momentum going with another 25 points to 14 in the fourth period for them to end up winning 85-80.

The victory improves Keilor to a 6-7 record on the season while the losses leaves Kilsyth at 6-8.

Monique Andriuolo ended the evening with 21 points and seven rebounds for Keilor with Maddie Garrick adding 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Aneta Bandilovska 15 points, six boards, five assists and two steals.

Hailey Wynd also had 13 points and six rebounds for the Thunder and Christa Reed nine points, five boards and three assists.

Lauren Scherf put together a massive performance for Kilsyth despite the loss with 29 points and 19 rebounds on 11/22 shooting to go with 6/8 at the foul line.

Isis Lopes added 20 points and six rebounds, Nikita Young nine points and three steals, and Briahna Whatman nine points and six assists.

 

LAUNCESTON TORNADOES 91 defeated DANDENONG RANGERS 65

The Launceston Tornadoes enjoyed the comforts of home on Saturday night to end up scoring a 26-point victory against the Dandenong Rangers.

The Tornadoes played host to the Rangers at Elphin Sports Centre and they started emphatically to just about have already put the game out of reach of Dandenong by quarter-time.

Launceston scored 24 consecutive points in the opening quarter and by quarter-time the home team was on top 32-8.

It was a relatively even contest the rest of the way but the Rangers could never make too many inroads on the deficit with the Tornadoes going on to record the 91-65 victory.

As a result of the win, Launceston improved to a 9-4 record this NBL1 South season while the Rangers are now 3-11 following the defeat.

Launceston finished the game collecting 47 rebounds to 31 from Dandenong while the Tornadoes shot a tremendous 50.7 per cent from the field opposed to 33.9 per cent from the Rangers.

Keely Froling produced a stunningly dominant all-round display for Launceston finishing with 25 points, 20 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Mariah Payne adding 24 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals with Marianna Tolo contributing 18 points, six assists, four steals and four boards, and Micah Simpson 13 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Clare Camac top-scored for Dandenong with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists, Makaela Zeldenryk 15 points, four boards and four assists, Maxine Allan 11 points and five rebounds, Maddison Zugna 10 points and five boards, and Georgia Taylor 10 points and three rebounds.

 

MOUNT GAMBIER PIONEERS 75 defeated ELTHAM WILDCATS 73

The Mount Gambier Pioneers overran the Eltham Wildcats to end up with a thrilling two-point victory at home on Saturday night.

The Pioneers were back home at The Ice House and the home team strung together 11 straight points during the opening quarter to go into the quarter-time break leading 23-19.

However, it was a tight game the rest of the way with never more than six points being the difference over the last three quarters.

Mount Gambier still managed to lead by four points at half-time but by three quarter-time it was Eltham on top 59-56 on the back of 20 points to 13 in the third term.

The stage was set for a cracking finish with scores all tied at 67-67 after a Shakera Reilly three-pointer for the Pioneers with five minutes to play.

Scoring was tough to come by over the last five minutes but in the end it was a bucket with just under two minutes remaining from Sherrie Calleia that ended up being enough to secure the 75-73 victory for the Pioneers.

The result improves Mount Gambier to an 11-2 record this season while Eltham is now 5-8 following the defeat.

Shakera Reilly ended the evening with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists for Mount Gambier while draining 5/12 from the land of plenty.

Sherrie Calleia added 16 points, six boards, three assists and three steals, Haliegh Reinoehl 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Cassandra Brown 11 points, six assists, five boards and three steals.

Hailey Leidel top-scored for Eltham with 28 points, seven rebounds and three assists while hitting 5/10 from three-point range. 

Bec Pizzey added 13 points and 11 rebounds, Lana Hollingsworth 13 points and three steals, and Korinne Campbell 12 points and four rebounds.

 

FRANKSTON BLUES 63 lost to NUNAWADING SPECTRES 66

It was another Saturday night NBL1 South Women's thriller between the Frankston Blues and Nunawading Spectres.

The Blues played host to the Spectres at Frankston Basketball Stadium but it was Nunawading who made the enterprising start with 20 points to 13 in the opening quarter.

Frankston worked back into the contest with 19 points to 16 in the second term and then in a low-scoring third term, the Blues ended up with 11 points to seven to level scores up at 43-43 by three quarter-time.

The stage was set for a tight finish and after only combining for 86 points over the opening three quarters, both teams scored 43 in the fourth term in an entertaining conclusion.

Nunawading did go up five after a layup to Megan Mullings with six minutes to play before soon after Alice Kunek scored to keep the Spectres up six.

However, with two minutes left Darcee Garbin dropped a triple for Frankston to put the home team back in front before Cassidy Mihalko responded with her own long ball for Nunawading.

That turned into a four-point play but scores were still level soon after when Garbin scored inside.

The Spectres then made the break that decided the game with a triple from Kunek, and another jumper from Emma Pearce. Kunek then iced the game at the foul line and the Spectres prevailed 66-63.

Alice Kunek ended the evening with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists for Nunawading while Emma Pearce contributed 14 points and eight boards, Cassidy Mihalko 13 points and seven rebounds, and Megan Mullings 10 points, five boards, three steals and two blocks.

Darcee Garbin delivered 29 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three assists for Frankston with Kate Gaze adding 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks, Bonnie Deas eight points and six boards, and Tori Jackson eight points and three rebounds.
