ROUND 10 – FRIDAY NIGHT
PERTH REDBACKS 71 lost to JOONDALUP WOLVES 84
The Perth Redbacks were back home at Belmont Oasis on Friday night looking to snap a losing streak but it was never going to be easy against the powerful Joondalup Wolves.
The Redbacks had lost their past couple of games to the Cockburn Cougars and Warwick Senators while the Lady Wolfpack arrived at Belmont Oasis on Friday night on top of the NBL1 West standings and having bounced back from a loss to East Perth by beating Perry Lakes and Kalamunda.
The task was ahead of the Redbacks and the Wolves made it all that much harder with an impressive first quarter made up of 28 points to 19. The visitors maintained that edge by half-time with Joondalup leading Perth at the half 47-38.
The Lady Wolfpack pulled a little further away in the third quarter with another 22 points to 18 and then closed the deal to record the 84-71 victory.
The win improves Joondalup to a 7-1 record on the season on the back of winning last year's West Coast Classic championship. The Redbacks have now lost three in-a-row to be 4-5 ahead of a trip south to take on the Slammers on Saturday evening.
The differential in shots attempted was remarkable with the Wolves going 34/77 from the field and the Redbacks just 27/56. That was with the Wolfpack pulling in 12 offensive rebounds to just two from the Redbacks as Joondalup also forced Perth into 18 turnovers on the night.
On the same night her husband was taking part in the NBL Grand Final at RAC Arena, Kayla Steindl was outstanding for the Lady Wolfpack against her former team. She delivered 22 points, five rebounds and five assists on shooting 3/6 from the field.
Amber Land added 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Joondalup, Tia Ucich 10 points and three boards, Rebecca Benson 10 points and three assists, Chelsea Belcher nine points, Georgia Denehey nine points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Nes'eya Williams eight points, nine boards, three assists and three steals.
Makailah Dyer did all she could once again to try and give the Redbacks the chance at victory with 25 points and seven rebounds including hitting 4/9 from three-point territory.
Jess Jakens finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Redbacks, Maddie Allen 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, and Denielle Ashworth 11 points and four boards.
LAKESIDE LIGHTNING 85 lost to WARWICK SENATORS 88
The Lakeside Lightning had revenge on their mind on the Warwick Senators and they came ever so close to delivering it on Friday night at Lakeside Recreation Centre.
It was only three weeks ago when the teams did battle at Warwick Stadium and on that night it was the Senators who handed the Lightning quite the spanking as they ended up winning 102-51.
Both teams made the semi finals of the West Coast Classic last year so such a big gap between the two teams in that game was a surprise, and it was much closer affair at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Friday night.
Since that loss to the Senators, the Lightning had won two of their past three matches with wins over the South West Slammers and Rockingham Flames while Warwick had kept on winning impressively the last two weeks over the Perry Lakes Hawks and Perth Redbacks.
But this contest would be a much tighter one even if the Senators started strongly to lead 18-12 by quarter-time.
Both teams got rolling a bit more offensively in the second period but Warwick further extended their advantage with 28 points to 24 to go into the half-time break leading 46-36.
The Senators further extended their lead in the third quarter to be up 72-59 heading into the fourth, but the Lightning weren’t done with yet.
Warwick's lead grew to 15 with seven minutes remaining with a bucket to Jayda Clark but that's where Lakeside's revival began starting with triples to Courtney Green and Mikayla Pirini.
Another triple to Ash Isenbarger and suddenly it was just a six-point ball game and that was back to three when Jae Flynn also connected from deep for Lakeside.
A pair of free-throws to Green and the home team was back within a point. Shortly after teenager Kyrah Daniels hit back-to-back baskets for the Lightning to level scores at 85-85 with 30 seconds on the clock.
The game-winning shot ended up being made by Senators youngster Caitlyn Jones and Warwick went on to win 88-85 to improve to 6-3 with the fourth successive win. Lakeside is now 3-5.
Stacey Barr has been the league's standout player the last two years and she is right back on top form now for the Senators after producing another 30 points, 12 rebounds and six assists including going 5/11 from three-point range.
Mackenzie Clinch-Hoycard was also tremendous for the Lightning with 25 points, 12 rebounds and five assists on 6/14 from beyond the arc.
Jayda Clark added 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists while Caitlyn Jones contributed nine points and five assists.
Ash Isenbarger put in a monster performance for Lakeside with 27 points, 17 rebounds, two assists and two steals while Mikayla Pirini added 18 points and five assists, Kyrah Daniels 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and Jae Flynn 11 points and three assists.
