ROUND 11 – SUNDAY
ROCKINGHAM FLAMES 109 defeated GOLDFIELDS GIANTS 80
The Rockingham Flames took out their pent up frustration after losing on Friday night on the Goldfields Giants in an eventual 29-point victory on Sunday to close Round 11 in the NBL1 West Men's competition.
Rockingham came into the round on a four-game winning streak to sit in second position on the table before losing a Grand Final rematch against the Perry Lakes Hawks at Bendat Basketball Centre on Friday night.
They backed up on Sunday at Mike Barnett Sports Complex up against a Giants team who had defeated the Willetton Tigers the night before to keep themselves in the mix for a top four position as well.
However, the Flames were in no mood to mess around on Sunday afternoon with a good crowd on hand on their home floor. Coming off his triple-double on Friday night, Marshall Nelson set the tone early for Rockingham even though they were still without key experienced pair Ryan Godfrey and Justin Beard.
Rockingham raced to an 11-point lead on the back of scoring 13 straight points in the opening quarter, but Goldfields had done well to stay in touch and only trail by four points at quarter-time, and just the seven points at half-time.
The Flames were never going to let them hang around for too long, though, and put their foot down in the third quarter piling on 30 points to 14 to open up a 23-point lead and to be in control 80-57 by three quarter-time.
From there, Rockingham secured the 109-80 victory to improve to a 10-3 record on the season while Goldfields is now 8-5 with both teams splitting their two Round 11 match ups.
The Flames shot a brilliant 55.6 per cent from the field for the game along with hitting 16/33 from three-point land with Marshall Nelson delivering another standout performance consisting of 25 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Tom Jervis put up 22 points, six boards and three blocks as well for Rockingham with Devondrick Walker adding 14 points and four assists, Travis Durnin 14 points, Callum Beard nine points and three rebounds, and Greg Hire nine points, 12 boards and four assists.
Mayo Malek led the charge on a tough afternoon for the Giants with 22 points and seven rebounds with Lafonzo Smith contributing 14 points and eight boards, Hussayn Ford 13 points and six rebounds, and Damon Ballantyne 10 points and five rebounds.
