NBL1 WEST – 2021 WOMEN'S SEASON
ROUND 17 – THURSDAY NIGHT

EAST PERTH EAGLES 89 lost to WARWICK SENATORS 95

With the East Perth Eagles needing a win to stay safe in the top four and the Warwick Senators just trying to lock in a playoff spot, Thursday's clash at Herb Graham Recreation Centre was always going to be fascinating.

The Eagles came into the game on their home floor sitting a game clear in third position in the NBL1 West Women's Division standings, but with the Perth Redbacks and Rockingham Flames breathing down their necks, they are still not guaranteed of a top four spot.

Meanwhile, the Senators had dropped their last couple of games and with an 8-7 record, still needed a win in the run home to guarantee a playoff spot with the Mandurah Magic and Perry Lakes Hawks breathing down their necks.

So the stage was set for the two local rivals and it just had that feeling of a game that would go right down to the wire, and that's exactly how it panned out.
The Senators managed to lead narrowly 20-17 by quarter-time and then it was a high-scoring, exciting affair in the second term with both teams catching fire to combine to put up 57 points.

That saw Warwick extend their lead narrowly to 50-44 by half-time and the Senators then threatened to open up a sizeable edge when going up double-figures in the third quarter after a Tayla Hepburn three-point play.

However, by three quarter-time the Eagles had closed the gap back to five and after both teams traded blow for blow for much of the fourth quarter, Opal Mader threatened to take over for East Perth.

When she hit a three with 3:30 remaining, the Eagles led 84-83 and they had all the momentum, but then a charge taken from Stacey Barr on BJ Moyes helped turn the tide back the way of Warwick.

Hepburn and Chloe Forster hit buckets either side of that but Mader wasn’t done yet and hit the next five points for East Perth to level scores up at 89-89 with a minute left.

But former Eagle Nicole Jorre de St Jorre responded with a huge three for Warwick before Barr iced the game at the foul line to give the Senators the crucial 95-89 victory.

It was an evening with a host of standout individual performances too including Mackenzie Clinch-Hoycard finishing with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists for Warwick on 10/16 shooting and hitting 3/4 from three-point territory.

Stacey Barr produced a triple-double also for the Senators made up of 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists with Tayla Hepburn contributing 14 points and five assists, Chloe Forster 13 points, six steals and four assists, and Nicole Jorre de St Jorre 12 points and three assists.

The Lady Eagles did dearly miss the scoring punch of Tahlia Fejo but Mary Goulding battled hard once more for 26 points, 23 rebounds, four assists and two steals with Opal Mader contributing 25 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

BJ Moyes added 20 points and five assists as point guard while Eryn Fisher contributed nine points and five rebounds.

JOONDALUP WOLVES 83 defeated COCKBURN COUGARS 66

The Joondalup Wolves strengthened their hopes of snatching the regular season championship with a solid 17-point win over the Cockburn Cougars on Thursday night.

The Lady Wolfpack came into the clash on their home floor at HBF Arena on a four-game winning streak and on a significant high following last week's spectacular overtime win over fellow top spot contender Willetton Tigers.

That meant it was a big ask for the Cougars to head up to Joondalup on Thursday night to take them on but there was plenty on the line for Cockburn too.

The Cougars came into the game having won their past two matches to keep them inside the top eight with an 8-7 record, but with eh Mandurah Magic and Perry Lakes Hawks not far behind and not enough room for them all to take part in the playoffs, every game now counts for plenty.

It was a tight opening to the contest as well with the Wolves narrowly leading the Cougars 22-21 by quarter-time, but it was the second quarter where the home team really put their foot down.

It was quite the dominant defensive display for the quarter from Joondalup as they held Cockburn just to four points for the entire 10 minutes. The Wolves scores 20 more points themselves up the other end to go into half-time well in control leading 42-25.

The game was all but over as a contest on the back of that with the Lady Wolfpack then cruising to the eventual 83-66 against the Cougars as part of Round 17 action in the NBL1 West Women's Division.

The win takes the Wolves ahead of the Tigers, at least for now, in the battle for first place and it was on the back of Amber Land producing a strong performance inside against the Cougars with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists on shooting 8/10 from the floor.

Nes'eya Williams added 13 points and four assists to continue her good form for Joondalup with Georgia Denehey contributing 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, Kayla Steindl nine points and seven boards, Olivia Basso six points, and Rebecca Benson six points.

The Cougars are now just clinging to their top eight position as a result of the loss despite another 24 points and seven rebounds from Taylah Simmons on the back of her triple-double last week.

Jessie Edwards added 13 points and nine rebounds for Cockburn, Jesni Cooper eight points and three boards, Kahlia Morgan six points, and Molly Matthews six points, four rebounds and two assists.
