NBL1 West Recap | Women's Friday Round 10

The Joondalup Wolves, Warwick Senators and Mandurah Magic all flexed their considerable muscle in impressive Friday night NBL1 West Women's victories to open Round 10 of the 2022 season.

The Wolfpack remained undefeated with their win while the Senators improved to 8-2 and the Magic to 7-3 as their experienced, deep and supremely talented rosters all put on impressive shows.

The Friday night action begin at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre with the Mandurah Magic getting off to a flying start and maintaining that the rest of the way to beat the Cockburn Cougars 89-63.

The legend herself Casey Mihovilovich led the charge for the Magic as the league's games record holder delivered another 20 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Jewel Williams top-scored for Cockburn with 13 points.

The Warwick Senators proved too strong also for the East Perth Eagles on Friday night scoring the 96-65 victory at Herb Graham Recreation Centre.

Nat Burton put up 25 points for the Senators, Stacey Barr 21, Chloe Forster 18 and Leonie Fiebich 16 to go with 17 rebounds. Maria Blazejewski scored 12 points for East Perth and Jorjah Smith 11.

The Joondalup Wolves continued their undefeated start to the season as well beating the Perth Redbacks 98-54 at HBF Arena.

Robbi Ryan led the way for the Wolfpack with 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Mikayla Pirini top-scored for Perth with 18 points and five assists against her former team.

Round 10 in the NBL1 West season will continue on Saturday evening beginning at 5pm with the South West Slammers at home to the Joondalup Wolves in a bottom against top match up.

Also at 5pm, the Warwick Senators back up in a rematch from Friday against the East Perth Eagles before at 5.30pm, it's the Goldfields Giants back at home to the Perry Lakes Hawks.

Then at 6pm, the Lakeside Lightning will be hosting the Mandurah Magic and finally at 6.30pm, the Kalamunda Eastern Suns are at home to the Rockingham Flames in the final game of the round.

MANDURAH MAGIC 89 defeated COCKBURN COUGARS 63

The Mandurah Magic made quite the statement on their home floor on Friday beating the Cockburn Cougars by 26 points in a surprisingly emphatic result.

Mandurah hosted Cockburn at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Friday night to open Round 10 in the NBL1 West competition with both teams entering the contest with identical 6-3 records.

That set the stage for what loomed as a tantalising match up featuring two teams fighting over a spot in the top four and looking to show their championship credentials.

There was nothing to suggest what was to come but it didn’t take long for the Magic to put their stamp on the contest going on a 7-0 run in the opening quarter and to lead by as much as 11 points.

Mandurah was still up 18-10 by the end of the first quarter before the home team blew the game wide open even further in the second period. They scored 12 points in-a-row to lead by as much as 20 and be in control 46-27 by the major break.

The damage had been done and the Magic lead grew to as much as 28 points in the second half on the way to the eventual 89-63 victory to see them move into fourth spot at 7-3 with the now 6-4 Cougars slipping to fifth.

The Magic dominated in most areas including on the glass with 47 rebounds to 33 for the game while then shooting 49.2 per cent from the field opposed to 31.8 from the Cougars.

Casey Mihovilovich continues to lead the Magic from the front as she continues to extend her hold on the league's games record. In her 519th appearance, she was again superb with 20 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Alex Wittinger also worked hard for Mandurah with 19 points and six rebounds with Carly Boag contributing 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, Hannah Little 13 points, nine boards and four assists, and Sarah Toeaina 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Jewel Williams ended up top-scoring for Cockburn with 13 points and two assists while Jessie Edwards finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Kat Tudor 11 points and four boards, and Alina Hartmann seven points and five rebounds.

 

EAST PERTH EAGLES 65 lost to WARWICK SENATORS 96

The Warwick Senators consolidated their hold on a top four spot in the NBL1 West Women's competition with a 31-point road win against the East Perth Eagles on Friday night.

This game was originally scheduled to take place last Friday night but Herb Graham Recreation Centre suffered a bit of a fire so it was moved to this Friday as the first half a double-header between the two teams in Round 10.

It didn’t take long for the Senators to assert their authority on the contest to score nine straight points and lead by as much as 12 before leading 22-12 by the end of the first quarter.

Warwick pulled away further in the second quarter with another 6-0 run to lead by 19 points and to be in control 48-29 at the long break.

It was more of the same in the second half with the Senators leading getting out to 31 points in the third term, and 43 points in the fourth quarter before they settled on the 96-65 victory.

The victory improved the Senators to an 8-2 record having won five in-a-row while the Eagles have lost five straight at 3-8 with the two teams to do it all again on Saturday night at Warwick Stadium.

Nat Burton dominated the first half for the Senators in her battle with experienced big Ellyce Ironmonger as they renewed their longstanding rivalry. Burton ended the night with 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Former MVP Stacey Barr was up against one of her former teams and produced 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals as well for Warwick with Chloe Forster adding 18 points and five assists.

There was no Sam Roscoe for the Senators but Leone Fiebich has stepped into the voice and had 16 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and three steals on her debut appearance. Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard added 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Maria Blazejewski top-scored for the Eagles with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists with Jorjah Smith contributing 11 points, three rebounds and three assists, Tahlia Kelly nine points and four assists, and BJ Moyes nine points and four rebounds.

 

JOONDALUP WOLVES 88 defeated PERTH REDBACKS 54

The Joondalup Wolves put their undefeated record on the line on Friday night and they kept it going with an emphatic 34-point victory against the Perth Redbacks.

There was no shortage of players up against their former teams in the match up at HBF Arena with Nes'eya Williams-Parker playing for the Wolves up against her old Redbacks team, and then Mikayla Pirini up against the Wolfpack in a Perth outfit too.

The Wolves went on an 11-0 run early in the game to lead by double-figures during the first quarter before leading 22-15 by quarter-time.

The Redbacks did manage to keep things interesting during the second quarter to limit the Joondalup lead to 42-31.

The Wolfpack continued to pull away the longer the game went, though, and after leading by 18 points at three quarter-time, they delivered another 29 points to 13 in the fourth period to end up winning 88-54.

The victory sees Joondalup improve to a perfect 11-0 record on the season while Perth has now lost three straight to be losing touch with the top eight at 3-9.

Robbi Ryan put together another standout performance for the Wolfpack with 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals with Laniesha Paddon having her best night of the season with 13 points on a perfect 6/6 shooting in 14 minutes of court time.

Tia Ucich added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Wolves, Nes'eya Parker-Williams 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Teige Morrell 11 points, 13 boards and three assists.

Mikayla Pirini finished with 18 points and five rebounds for the Redbacks while Parker Esary added 11 points and six boards, Shenae Hartree 10 points and five rebounds, and Kayonna Lee five points, five rebounds and three assists.

It was a rough night for Makailah Dyer with just the four points on 1/13 shooting.
