NBL1 WEST – 2022 WOMEN'S SEASON
ROUND 10 – SATURDAY NIGHT

SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS 45 lost to JOONDALUP WOLVES 103

It was top against bottom at Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday and things went as expected with the Joondalup Wolves beating the South West Slammers by 58 points.

Coming into the game the Wolfpack had a perfect 11-0 record having beaten the Perth Redbacks on Friday night to open Round 10 while the Slammers were in bottom spot having won just one game in the last three years.

So the job was ahead of South West even on their home floor on Saturday night and the Wolves weren’t in a generous mood as they took full advantage of the Slammers missing key pair Alex Ciabattoni and Tylinn Carter.

Joondalup scored 13 consecutive points during the first quarter to lead by as much as 17 points and to be in control 26-11 by the end of one.

Another 9-0 run during the second term helped the Wolves push the lead out to 27 points and they were leading 49-24 going into the half-time break well and truly in control.

It was more of the same in the third quarter with another run of 13 straight points from the Wolfpack as the lead blew out to 46 points, and the final 58-point margin was the highest of the night with Joondalup ending up winning 103-45.

The result keeps the Wolfpack clear on top of the table with a perfect 12-0 record while the Slammers remain last at 1-10.

Robbi Ryan led the charge once more for Joondalup with another 20 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists while Nes'eya Parker-Williams continued her career best season producing 16 points, eight boards, seven steals and four assists in her 91st match.

WARWICK SENATORS 97 defeated EAST PERTH EAGLES 59

The Warwick Senators continued to build some impressive momentum with a second big win for the weekend against the East Perth Eagles on Saturday night.

The two teams played on Friday at Herb Graham Recreation Centre with the Senators proving too strong winning by 34 points leading into Saturday's return encounter at Warwick Stadium.

If East Perth was going to be any chance of turning around the result they would need to start well, and unfortunately for the Eagles that didn’t happen and Warwick picked right up where they left off the night before.

The buildings are little more than five minutes from one another so the nearby rivals went to battle once more with the Senators wasting no time to get rolling scoring 17 consecutive points during the first quarter to already lead by as many as 19 points.

That lead for the home team grew to as much as 28 points in the second term with Warwick heading into the half-time break leading 46-26.

It was more of the same throughout the second half with the Senators going on another 11-0 run in the third quarter to open up a 32-point lead, and then it was out to 44 in the last term before they went on to score the 97-59 victory.

The victory improves the Senators to a 9-2 record on the season having now won six in-a-row while the Eagles are struggling at 3-9 with six consecutive defeats.

There was a stark contrast in the shooting of the two teams with the Senators going at 50.0 per cent from the floor and East Perth just 29.2 while Warwick hit 13/30 from three-point land and the Eagles 9/28.

Stacey Barr was tremendous again for Warwick with another 23 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists and five steals with new signing Leonie Fiebich superb in her second appearance with 22 points, 16 rebounds and six assists.

Nat Burton also had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals, Chloe Forster 14 points, seven assists and five boards, and Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

It was another tough night for East Perth despite Tahlia Kelly's 19 points on shooting 4/8 from three-point range.

GOLDFIELDS GIANTS 76 defeated PERRY LAKES HAWKS 64

The Goldfields Giants created another slice of history in their inaugural season by winning consecutive matches with a win at home over the Perry Lakes Hawks.

The Giants defeated the Perth Redbacks in Kalgoorlie last week for their second win of their first NBL1 West season as the Hawks came to Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium on Saturday evening.

Goldfields might have been feeling good after that last up win, but it was Perry Lakes who started the better to lead by eight points by quarter-time in Kalgoorlie.

The Perry Lakes lead grew to as much as 14 points during the second term, but the Giants did well to fight their way back into the contest and to trail by just six points at half-time.

The Giants were able to go on a 7-0 scoring run during the third quarter with scores all tied heading into the final quarter.

That's where Goldfields were tremendous outscoring Perry Lakes 24 points to 12 to end up winning 76-64 for their third win of the season to improve to a 3-7 record. The Hawks are now 5-7 having lost three in-a-row.

Ruby Vlahov finished the night with 13 points and four rebounds for Perry Lakes with Malia Tharpe contributing 11 points and four boards, Emma Clarke 11 points and eight rebounds, and Mia Satie nine points, six boards and six assists.

LAKESIDE LIGHTNING 66 lost to MANDURAH MAGIC 73

The Mandurah Magic completed a perfect weekend by beating the Lakeside Lightning by seven points at Lakeside Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

The Magic were supremely impressive on Friday night to open Round 10 beating the Cockburn Cougars at home by 26 points before making the trek up the freeway to take on the Lightning on Saturday.

Both teams came into the match on two-game winning streaks but it was the Magic who kept their strong form going from the night before to start in emphatic fashion going on an 11-0 run to lead by double-figures during the first quarter.

Mandurah were still up 20-14 by quarter-time and then the advantage for the Magic got out to as much as 12 points in the second term before they went into half-time leading 44-33.

While the Lightning made a couple of runs during the second half, they never quite got close enough to seriously threaten and the Magic remained in control all the way to the eventual 73-66 victory.

The result means the Magic have won three straight for an 8-3 record on the season after Round 10 while the Lightning are now 5-5.

The dominance on the boards for Mandurah was pivotal in the result with the Magic collecting 55 rebounds to 42 along with 20 offensive boards to eight which helped them to 14 extra field goal attempts on a night where both teams shot similarly across the board.

Hannah Little ended up top scoring for Mandurah with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Alex Wittinger contributed 13 points and five boards, Casey Mihovilovich 11 points, four rebounds and four assists, Rachel Halleen 11 points on 3/5 shooting from deep, and Sarah Toeaina 11 points and nine rebounds.

KALAMUNDA EASTERN SUNS 50 lost to ROCKINGHAM FLAMES 85

Round 10 in the NBL1 West wrapped up at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Saturday night and it was a big win for the Rockingham Flames over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

As part of the NBL1 Mental Health Round, the Flames were wearing specially designed uniforms to mark the occasion in conjunction with A Stitch in Time to help raise awareness for mental health.

The Flames lifted for the occasion too away from home.

Rockingham came into the clash having won five of nine games so far this season, but the Eastern Suns had lost nine straight and the Flames quickly got rolling to open up an early double-figure lead.

The Flames still led 20-12 by quarter-time and the visitors then further pulled away at once scoring 12 straight points to lead by 25 and to be on top 46-21 with that advantage going into half-time.

It was more of the same in the second half from Rockingham with the lead growing to 36 points in the third quarter, 40 in the fourth and eventually they won the game 85-50.

The result improved the Flames to a 6-4 record on the season while the Eastern Suns are now 1-10 having lost the last 10.
