NBL1 West Recap | Women's Saturday Round 5

The defending champion Willetton Tigers pulled a miraculous Saturday night comeback in Round 6 of the NBL1 West Women's competition with wins also for the Joondalup Wolves, Cockburn Cougars, Perry Lakes Hawks and Rockingham Flames.

Round 5 in the NBL1 West Women's competition began with two games on Friday night which saw the East Perth Eagles defeat the Perth Redbacks 76-59 and the Rockingham Flames defeat the South West Slammers 76-69.

It was another commanding performance at home from the Joondalup Wolves on Saturday evening as they beat the Lakeside Lightning 115-69 at HBF Arena.

Robbi Ryan put up 27 points for the Wolfpack and Nes'eya Williams continued her career best form with 26 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Caitie Jones scored 20 points for the Lightning.

It was then a stunning come from behind road victory for the defending champion Willetton Tigers as they ended up beating the Warwick Senators 81-76 at Warwick Stadium on Saturday night.

Desiree Kelley scored 22 points for Willetton, Imogen Ayliffe 22 and Alex Sharp 20 while Stacey Barr delivered 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Senators.

The game of the round was always likely to be at Wally Hagan Stadium between the Cockburn Cougars and Mandurah Magic, and it delivered. In the end it was Cockburn who prevailed 105-93.

Jessie Edwards was massive for the Cougars with 36 points and 13 rebounds while Kat Tudor and Alina Hartmann combined for 35 points and 9/12 three-point shooting. Sarah Toeaina scored 25 points for the Magic.

The Perry Lakes were then able to hold out a spirited second half performance from the South West Slammers to win 102-75 at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Emma Clarke starred for Perry Lakes with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four assists with Tylinn Carter delivering 28 points for the Slammers and Alex Ciabattoni 25.

The Rockingham Flames made it a double-win weekend by beating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 104-82 at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Taylor Ortlepp again starred for Rockingham hitting eight three-pointers on the way to 26 points while Lexie Bland scored 23 points for the Eastern Suns and Georgia Denehey 22.

Round 5 in the NBL1 West Women's competition will now wrap up on Sunday afternoon at Ray Owen Sports Centre with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns hosting the East Perth Eagles.

JOONDALUP WOLVES 115 defeated LAKESIDE LIGHTNING 69

The Joondalup Wolves kept their undefeated start to the season rolling on Saturday night with a thumping win at home against the Lakeside Lightning.

The Wolfpack were back at HBF Arena on Saturday night on the back of a strong win eight days earlier against the Warwick Senators and they showed their class again against the Lightning in Round 5.

Joondalup started strongly with 29 points to 20 in the opening quarter and then had opened up a match-winning advantage by half-time on the back of 33 points to 17 in the second quarter.

The Wolves led 62-37 by half-time and continued on with the job with another 33 points to 16 in the third quarter, and then 20 to 16 in the fourth to end up winning 115-69.

The result means that Joondalup improves to 5-0 on the season after five rounds while the Lightning are 2-3 under new coach Blake Srdarev. 

The Wolves collected 50 rebounds to Lakeside's 28 for the game while forcing the Lightning into 23 turnovers and then shooting 53.7 per cent from the floor opposed to 39.7 per cent.

Robbi Ryan produced another exciting performance for the Wolfpack made up of 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals with Nes'eya Williams continuing her career-best run of form with 26 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Teige Morrell had another strong all-round performance 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists with Tia Ucich putting up 12 points and three assists, and Laniesha Paddon 11 points and six boards.

Caitie Jones continued her strong start to her first season with Lakeside top-scoring with 20 points to go with two assists while Sara Dickey had 13 points and three rebounds, and Mia Jacobs 10 points and three steals.

 

WARWICK SENATORS 76 lost to WILLETTON TIGERS 81

The Willetton Tigers produced a tremendous comeback victory on the road to the Warwick Senators on Saturday night in Round 5 of the NBL1 West Women's competition.

The Senators made a tremendous start against the defending champions at Warwick Stadium to lead by as much as eight points late in the opening quarter, and then again by eight shortly before half-time.

Warwick was still on top 40-36 at half-time and then again opened the third quarter strongly to open up a double-figure advantage in quick time. 

Again when Stacey Barr scored with just under seven minutes on the clock, the Senators were leading by 10 points on their home floor and it was still an eight-point game when Barr knocked down two more free-throws with five minutes to go.

That's when Willetton's leaders stepped up though. Desiree Kelley hit four quick points, then Alex Sharp hit a three and it was a five-point game.

Kelly then scored again and Sharp made a free-throw to tie scores up before Kelley closed the door for the Tigers on the Senators with a triple and two free-throws for the 81-76 win.

Willetton closed out the game scoring the final 10 points in the last three minutes for the stunning comeback victory.

Desiree Kelley finished the night with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks for the Tigers while Imogen Ayliffe put up 22 points, eight boards, three blocks and two assists in just 23 minutes.

Alex Sharp added 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists with Emma Gandini contributing seven points, 12 boards, four assists and three steals.

Stacey Barr finished with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for Warwick with Nat Burton delivering 19 points and four rebounds, Chloe Forster nine points and seven boards, Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard nine points and eight rebounds, and Nicole Jorre de St Jorre eight points, eight assists and seven boards.

 

COCKBURN COUGARS 105 defeated MANDURAH MAGIC 93

Two of the standout teams so far of the 2022 season added another piece on Saturday night and played out a terrific contest that saw the Cockburn Cougars prevailing over the Mandurah Magic.

The Cougars came into the game having won three of their four matches so far this season while the Magic had won their opening four matches setting the stage for a tantalising match up at Wally Hagan Stadium.

The Cougars also welcomed Alina Hartmann into the line-up for her first game of the season with the Magic also unveiling Sarah Toeaina.

Mandurah was looking to keep its unbeaten start to the season going and started well to lead 27-25 by quarter-time, but Cockburn was able to turn it on in the second term with 33 points to go into half-time leading 58-50.

The Cougars continued on the momentum with another 27 points to 16 in the third quarter. That saw them set up a match-winning lead and then withstand the 27 points in the final term from Mandurah to still win 105-93.

Jessie Edwards proved the dominant player on the floor delivering 36 points, 13 rebounds and two assists for the Cougars on 13/18 shooting from the field and 10/11 from the free-throw line.

Kat Tudor hit 5/6 from three-point range for 19 points, four rebounds and three assists as well for the Cougars while Alina Hartmann played her first game of the season for 16 points, five boards and five assists on 4/6 from beyond the arc.

Jewel Williams also finished with 22 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals with Tia Morgan contributing eight points and six rebounds.

While Mandurah suffered its first loss of the season, new import Sarah Toeaina put up 25 points on 11/14 shooting.

Carly Boag also finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Alex Wittinger 18 points, eight boards and five assists, and the league's games record holder Casey Mihovilovich 16 points, six assists and six steals.

 

PERRY LAKES HAWKS 102 defeated SOUTH WEST SLAMMERS 75

The Perry Lakes Hawks continue to build some momentum this season after a 27-point win over the South West Slammers at home on Saturday night.

The Hawks were hosting a Slammers team at Bendat Basketball Centre who might have lost on Friday night at home to the Rockingham Flames, but it was a vastly improved showing with the inclusions of Alex Ciabattoni and Tylinn Carter.

Perry Lakes started strongly with 25 points to 11 in the first quarter and went on with the job from there including another 22 points to 17 in the second quarter to be leading 47-28 by half-time.

The Hawks then put up 32 points in the third quarter to ensure a match-winning lead before going on to win 102-75 and improve to 3-2 on the season while the Slammers are now 0-6.

Perry Lakes dominated the glass with 64 rebounds to 37 from the Slammers including 29 offensive boards to 13 which ended up seeing the Hawks take an extra 18 field goals for the night.

Emma Clarke produced another impressive game for the Hawks with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four assists. Sara Loomis contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds, Maddy Dennis 19 points and seven boards, and Annika Renkema 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Tylinn Carter put up 28 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Slammers with Alex Ciabattoni contributing 25 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

 

ROCKINGHAM FLAMES 104 defeated KALAMUNDA EASTERN SUNS 82

The Rockingham Flames made it two wins inside 24 hours in Round 5 of the NBL1 West Women's season with a win at home on Saturday night over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

The Flames had opened the weekend with a win on the road over the South West Slammers on Friday night and then backed it up on Saturday hosting the Eastern Suns at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

Rockingham started well with 28 points to 23 in the first quarter but Kalamunda made a game of it with 23 points to 20 in the second term.

The Flames were able to blow the game wide open, though, in the third quarter by piling on 36 points to 19 before going on to record the 104-82 victory on their home floor.

It was an impressive shooting night from both teams with Rockingham going at 52.9 per cent from the field while hitting 19/44 at 43.2 per cent from beyond the arc. The Suns went at 50.0 per cent from the floor and 14/26 at 53.9 per cent from three-point territory.

However, Rockingham was able to attempt 12 extra field goals for the game on the way to the 22-point victory.

Taylor Ortlepp put up 26 points on 8/15 shooting from three-point land for Rockingham with Christina Boag contributing 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Mehryn Kraker 15 points, four boards and four assists, and Patty Brossmann 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lexie Bland put up 23 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Eastern Suns with Georgia Denehey contributing 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals, and Ella Thornton-Elliott 16 points on 4/6 shooting from beyond the arc.
