Newcastle Falcons flying again in NBL1 East

The Newcastle Falcons are flying again.

The Newcastle Falcons are flying again.

The Newcastle Basketball board of directors decided that from 2022 onwards, all of Newcastle Basketball’s senior and junior representative teams will be known as the Newcastle Falcons.

This decision was made after the board considered results of a survey in which 51 percent of respondents voted for the change of name.

"The Board of Directors were impressed by the level of response from the basketball community and we have accepted the outcome of the survey," Newcastle Basketball general manager Neil Goffet said.

"The Newcastle Falcons was overwhelmingly the preferred option and the Board endorsed this as the new name of our junior and senior representative teams from 2022 onwards.

"We are cognisant of the sentiment attached to this decision but it was made responsibly and respectfully and we have committed to letting our history shape our future under the Falcons banner.

"We would like to thank everyone for taking the time to submit their responses and help us determine the way forward for this growing organisation."

Formed in 1979, at the same time the National Basketball League was born in Newcastle, the Falcons were one of the NBL’s foundation clubs and competed in the league until 1999.

The Falcons men’s and women’s teams will represent Newcastle in the inaugural NBL1 East competition in 2022, and in Basketball NSW junior and senior Waratah Leagues.
