Round 1 of the 2024 NBL1 Central season started off with a bang, in particular, a game-winning bucket from Eastern Mavericks’ Owen Raneberg sent his side into shock as they claimed their first win of the season.
The 20-year-old guard exerted confidence on the floor as he hit two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds against the Central Districts Lions.
As they headed to overtime, the Mavericks were one point down in the last second, with Raneberg dropping a three to earn an 82-80 win.
“We found the right spot and I was happy that my teammates trusted me to take the shots,” Raneberg said to NBL Media.
“I watched it go in and I was more in shock, and then it hit when I saw all my teammates running at me.”
Raneberg finished the game with a perfect 3/3 from outside, the spark off the bench that led the Mavericks to a strong finish.
After his show-stopping bucket, Raneberg was grateful to his teammates for cheering him on, leading him to express his confidence in the team for the rest of the season.
“A lot of my teammates, ex-teammates, some of the imports, family members, all showing some love,” he said.
“It was great to have our home crowd there and a lot of new faces with the group, I think that was a really good way to start the season. We’ll try to build some momentum on it.
“We’re a young and hard-working team, so we need to keep working and see what happens. We’re all really eager to improve from last season and keep building,” he said.
The Mavericks face last year’s Grand Final runners-up, the Forestville Eagles on Thursday night at 8:15pm ACDT.
Raneberg gave a promising preview of the game and praised their hard work in the off-season.
“We just need to stick to what we know, we’ve gone over a lot of film on what we have to do,” he said.
“But it’s more about going out and putting it into practice, and displaying what we’ve done.”
The game will be broadcast live via NBL1.com.au, and the NBL1 App.
