The Ballarat Miners have announced an update to their Men’s NBL1 South coaching position ahead of the 2026 season, with Ray Borner step into the role of Head Coach.

Current Men’s Head Coach Luke Brennan has advised the club that, due to external basketball opportunities, he will be unavailable to commit to the majority of the upcoming NBL1 South 2026 season. As a result, the Miners and Brennan have mutually agreed to move in a different direction.

The club thanked Brennan for his professionalism and contribution to the program over the past two seasons.

A Ballarat basketball icon, Borner brings an extensive résumé to the role, including four Olympic campaigns, Basketball Australia Hall of Fame honours, and recent senior coaching experience. He also has a strong connection to the region, having previously coached the Miners to their last conference championship in 2001.

“Ray’s passion for Ballarat basketball, combined with his experience at the highest level, makes this a special appointment for our club,” Travis Merlo - Ballarat Basketball CEO said. “He understands what this program represents and is fully aligned with our long-term vision of developing local athletes, coaches, and stronger connections between our junior and senior programs.”

Borner said he was excited to return to the club and focus on building a sustainable pathway for local talent.

“I’m excited to be back coaching the Ballarat Miners, a club that holds special meaning for me after leading the team to its last conference championship in 2001,” Borner said. “My focus is on building a strong, sustainable program that gives local Ballarat players the opportunity to compete and develop at a high level. This is a great opportunity to bring new ideas and fresh energy to the program, and I’m grateful for the trust shown in me as we move forward.”

The Miners believe the combination of Borner’s experience and leadership, alongside their existing assistant coaching group, provides a balanced foundation as preparations continue for the NBL1 South 2026 season.

The NBL1 South 2026 season tips off on Friday 27th March 2026. For all the latest updates, including player signings, coaching appointments and league news, make sure you’re following NBL1 South on Facebook and Instagram.
