Panthers and Warriors produce another classic in double overtime
If you thought the recent rivalry between the South Adelaide Panthers and the Woodville Warriors couldn’t get better - it added another chapter with the double overtime classic taken out by the Panthers 104-100 at the Jungle. In one of the games of the season so far both teams answered bucket for bucket throughout the evening but it came down to the final minute of regulation
Nick Wurm (33 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and four steals) made the contested triple against Sam Johns with 1.2 seconds to go with the Warriors able to force Adelaide 36er Alex Starling’s shot wide to take it to overtime 78-78.
Wurm continued to hit big shots answered by import Jalen Jaspers (18 points and six rebounds) for the Panthers but it again came down to the final minute with Starling (18 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks) fouling out and Wurm to the free throw line. He made both and out of a timeout the Panthers inexplicably turned the ball over to give Riley Meldrum a look which he hit to bring it back to 90-89. Johns answered with free throws but it wasn’t done yet…
After Sharif Black’s huge off-balance triple to tie it at 92-92 we were heading for a second overtime…
The second overtime saw key moments with Jaspers missing an open layup, Black (16 points and 10 rebounds) blocked his second chance rebound but the Warriors were forced to foul Johns and Jaspers who each made both and this time the Warriors couldn’t find another tying basket and the Panthers escaped 104-100 in the finish.
