Next Mansfield up as Basham-less Rockets dispose of Sabres

Despite having no Brooke Basham the North Adelaide Rockets in the Kayo Freebies Game of the Week disposed of the Sturt Sabres 56-78 in convincing fashion at Springbank. Olympic bound for Australia in 3x3 Lauren Mansfield covered Basham’s absence with 25 points, seven assists, six steals and five rebounds while Jordyn Freer narrowly missed a double double of 22 points, eight rebounds and fours assists.

Tayla Corrigan made life difficult for the smaller Sabres lineup all night with eight points and 12 rebounds of her own - Tayla Brazel for the Sabres was their best with 23 points, four rebounds and three steals after missing their last encounter in Round 2. A 15-28 third quarter sealed the results early for the Rockets who move two games clear of them on the ladder.

Ace leads in pack as three card draw from Schenck sees Tigers to important win

The Tigers began their tough twenty four hours ahead as they took out the first leg of their double against the Woodville Warriors away from home 78-86 at the Castle of St Clair. Star import Regan Schenck produced another triple double in the season with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists to set up the Tigers with a handy lead in the first 11-17.

The Warriors hit back, led again by import duo Holly Forbes with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Ida Andersson with 17 points with five triples, five assists and steals. The Tigers however nailed 15 triples at 37.5 percent thanks to returning Bianca Stasinowsky with 16 points and four herself. Ace Harrison however sealed it for the Tigers in the second half collecting 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Recovery will be key for both sides as they go again at it Sunday afternoon to decide the head to head.

SOUTHERN TIGERS 86 (Harrison 20, Stasinowsky 16, McKendrick 12)

Eagles continue streak over plucky Mavs

It took till the fourth quarter but eventually the Forestville Eagles won their fourth game in a row with a punchy 49-64 win over a plucky Eastern Mavericks outfit at St Francis De Sales. Scores were low in the contest but plenty of the one on one and key matchups were intriguing viewing as a rusty first quarter ended with a Penzy for your thought…

The Eagles looked like they may have snapped the Mavs in the second thanks to Jess Simons with a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds but a fightback led by Mavs Stephanie Formby with 16 points and six rebounds kept them in the contest.

New recruit for the Eagles Amy West arriving from a recent BBL stint with the Oakland Wolves impacted in the third in the absence of Rachel King with six of her 12 points and five rebounds posted while Hannah Gardiner gave the Eagles the ascendency with 11 points herself.

The Mavs were plucky all the way to the end - but the Eagles extension of their winning streak showed they are a dark horse for this year’s championship.

EASTERN MAVERICKS 49 (Formby 16, Morris 12, Ramsey 10)

FORESTVILLE EAGLES 64 (Simons 17, West 12, Gardiner 11)

Great Scott pulls Panthers over Drmic-less Bearcats

The South Adelaide Panthers grabbed a crucial tight result in the season after a scrappy and ugly 59-56 upset win over the highly fancied West Adelaide Bearcats. The Bearcats minus Anthony Drmic found themselves in a tussle with the Sam John’s less Panthers as guard Curtis Scott got his first start of the season and made the most of it with eight points in the opening stanza. The Bearcats relied on another Tasmanian Jackjumper in Fabian Krslovic who played the whole night to cover Drmic and Jordan Heading missing, amassing 18 points, 17 rebounds with four offensive and five assists.

Alex Starling was a little below his best but still managed to grab a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds but both teams missed gettable shots throughout the night. It came down to the final minutes with the Panthers Scott stealing the rock and laying one up for a basket to give the Panthers the three point lead. The attempt from Krslovic was … and the Panthers claimed the split and crucial series against the Bearcats 2-0. Scott finished with 18 points and at 57 percent in the game’s most telling contribution.

SOUTH ADELAIDE PANTHERS 59 (Scott 18, Jaspers 14, Starling 12)

WEST ADELAIDE BEARCATS 56  (Krslovic 18, AK Gak, Stock 8)

Warriors overcome tenacious Tigers to take first leg

In what feels like an important set of games within 24 hours the Woodville Warriors landed the first blow on the Southern Tigers with a strong comeback in the second and final knockout in the fourth 81-67 at the Castle of St Clair.

The Tigers jumped the Warriors early 14-22 thanks to Michael Diggins (14 points and 10 rebounds) who threw down a dunk that had everyone’s jaws left wide open…

Putting the Warriors on his back, Riley Meldrum did his team a favour by yielding 22 points and six rebounds and got able support from Devon McGee with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The knockout blow came in the final quarter as Joe Jackson led his side home with nine of his 15 points and 12 rebounds in the 24-7 final chapter. Both teams back up against each other tomorrow where the season split still remains alive.

WOODVILLE WARRIORS 81 (Meldrum 22, McGee 17, Jackson 15)

SOUTHERN TIGERS 67 (Diggins 14, Abergut 13, Bulabek, White 10)

Eagles third quarter spoils Mavs 2004 Championship celebrations

The names Holmes, Mee, Johnson, Hulland, Davis and Doyle were all in the building on and off court but this NBL1 Central fixture wasn’t an Adelaide 36ers reunion. It was the Eagles up against the Mavericks who were celebrating their 20 year reunion of their 2004 championship which featured Jacob Holmes and Brad Davis. Unfortunately for the Mavs after a promising first half - the Eagles showed their class to win their ninth win of the season 79-102 at St Francis De Sales spoiling the night’s celebrations.

Greg Mays was involved early again with this block to ignite the Eagles…

Steered by Adam Doyle (11 points, four assists and rebounds) the gold and blue swooped in at various times to put a gap between themselves and the Mavs - but the Mavs through Lachy Hunter (15 points, seven rebounds and five assists) and a swathe of even contributions kept them in touch through the half. Uche Dibiamaka (15 points and five rebounds) threw down another earth shattering jam while Owen Hulland found some form with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The second half and third quarter belonged to Daniel Johnson though as he collected ten points with his high skill set at the offensive end to finish with 21 points at 72 percent from the field as his team took out the second half 34-51. The rebound count was a huge factor throughout the half with the Eagles grabbing 11 offensive rebounds and smashed the rebound count 37-53.

And of course you may be wondering why Mee is mentioned? The son of the 362 NBL game, two time champion and five time defensive player of the year Micale Mee made his debut for the Mavs with twenty one minutes of court time and will be one to watch for the remainder of the season as will Will Wimshurst who impressed with seven points in seven minutes of court time.

EASTERN MAVERICKS 79 (Hunter 15, Raneburg 12, Nuangki 11)

FORESTVILLE EAGLES 102 (Johnson 21, Dibiamaka 15, Hulland, Rathjen 14)
