Lakeside Lightning (117) defeated South West Slammers (44)
The Lakeside Lightning made it three wins from four games to start the season with Marnelle Garraud and Teige Morrell combining for 49 points in the 117-44 home win over the South West Slammers.
The Lightning came into the Friday night contest at Lakeside Recreation Centre looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season two weeks ago against the Mandurah Magic.
They were hosting a Slammers team who still hasn’t won a game since May 21, 2022, and the Lightning took little time blowing the game wide open by scoring 19 straight points in the first quarter.
Lakeside ended up putting up 38 points to 10 in the first quarter and then the home team continued on with the demolition job from there.
The Lightning lead got out to 46 points in the second term, 55 in the third and 73 in the fourth before they won by that 73-point margin to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Marnelle Garraud played less than 22 minutes for Lakeside but still put up 27 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists with 4/8 three-point shooting.
Teige Morrell also had 22 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists in just over 22 minutes while Molly Wilson contributed 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Latysha Derecourt added 12 points and six rebounds, and Jade Gowland 10 points, seven boards and three steals.
The Slammers have now lost 37 straight games but Courtney Bayliss came out of retirement to play her first game since 2019 up against her original club. She had eight points and six rebounds in the 212th game of her career.
Zaya Black also had eight points, five steals and four assists while Javene Fitch contributed seven points and five rebounds, and Addison Edwards seven points and six boards.

Mandurah Magic (75) lost to Perry Lakes Hawks (94)
Ash Isenbarger kept her hot form rolling and the Perry Lakes Hawks made it three straight wins defeating the Mandurah Magic 94-75 on the road on Friday night.
The Hawks arrived at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre on a two-game winning run to take on the Magic looking to snap their own two-game losing slide.
While Perry Lakes did end up leading the entire game, the margin was just a solitary point by the end of the first quarter.
The Hawks did start to blow the game open with the lead growing to 16 points in the second term and by half-time, they were on top 50-36.
If the Magic are anything, it's always competitive even when shorthanded and they were missing Nicole Fransson on Friday night, but they did keep fighting.
Mandurah managed to score eight straight points in the third quarter to make things interesting, but Perry Lakes continued to have the answers and went back up 20 in the final term before winning by 19.
The win improves the Hawks to a 4-2 record with three straight wins and it was 225-game veteran Ash Isenbarger kept her hot form from last Friday night where she had 37 points going.
She put up another 27 points, seven rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks to win the Anzac Round Medal on 10/15 shooting from the floor and 7/8 at the foul line.
Grace Stone added 18 points and four steals, Mia Satie 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals, Elizabeth Hutton 10 points and six boards, and Millie McCarthy nine points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals.
The Magic are now 2-5 with a third straight loss despite typically strong and tough performances from sisters Emma Klasztorny (22 points, seven rebounds, four assists) and Bree Mullenax (11 points, six rebounds).
Tiana Wilson-Palmer also had 14 points and three rebounds, Rachel Pettit 13 points on 3/4 three-point shooting and Casey Mihovilovich 10 points, seven assists and three steals.

MEN
Lakeside Lightning (92) defeated South West Slammers (83)
Josh Davey put his team on his back to lead the Lakeside Lightning to a first win of the season, but they had to fight to the end to overcome the South West Slammers 92-83.
The Lightning were back home at Lakeside Recreation Centre looking for a first win of the 2024 season after four losses topped off with the last two by a combined 52 points against the Mandurah Magic and Geraldton Buccaneers.
Lakeside couldn’t afford to continue the losing but it was never going to be easy against the visiting Slammers who have been better so far in 2024 than their 1-4 record suggests.
With Buay Tuach on fire from the outset, South West made a fast start blowing the game open with a 15-0 run in the first quarter to open up a 13-point lead, and then to still be leading 25-18 by quarter-time.
The Lightning did well to respond with their own run of scoring 13 straight points to open up a 12-point advantage during the second period, and to still be leading 45-35 by the half-time break.
Lakeside were able to build a lead as big as 16 points in the third term and the home team were still leading by 13 during the fourth, but the Slammers kept on coming.
South West were able to get back within six with four minutes to play before a steadying jumper for the Lightning from Davey.
The Slammers could never quite get closer than that with Lakeside holding firm for the nine-point victory to open their account for 2024.
Lightning captain Josh Davey won the Anzac Round Medal after producing 25 points and 17 rebounds on 11/16 shooting from the floor.
Marshawn Blackmon added 20 points, three rebounds and two assists for Lakeside with Max Richards contributing 15 points, eight boards, four assists and two steals, and Mike Adewunmi 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Buay Tuach couldn’t have done more for the Slammers playing all but 46 seconds of the game and finishing with 32 points, six rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots including 16/19 free-throws.
Pharell Keats added 17 points and six assists, Alex Holcombe 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Manyiel Wugol 10 points.

The starting five of the Mandurah Magic continues to be mighty impressive with Joel Murray and Jarrod Molnar combining for 64 points in Friday's 110-94 home win over the Perry Lakes Hawks.
Mandurah has now won four games this season and at different points members of their starting five, Murray, Molnar, Michael Durr, Lachlan Bertram and Julian Pesava, have all shown themselves capable of delivering match-winning performances.
They were back together on Friday night at Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre against the Hawks after Pesava missed both games last week while Murray was brilliant in the win against the Cockburn Cougars but was out with concussion protocols for the Saturday loss to Joondalup.
Perry Lakes arrived in Mandurah attempting to bounce back from a loss to the East Perth Eagles with former Magic import Dequan Abrom on board to play against his former team for the first time.
Both teams found their offensive groove in the first quarter and combined for 66 points with the Magic proving tough to stop leading 39-27 by the end of the opening stanza.
The Hawks were up to the challenge, though, and put up another 32 points to 23 in the second period and by half-time it was Mandurah clinging to a 62-59 advantage.
That set up a tantalising second half and the Magic were able to work back on top to lead by as much as 10 points in the third quarter, and 18 in the fourth to end up winning by 16 points.
Mandurah improved to a 4-4 record as a result of the win while shooting 46 per cent from the floor as a team on the back of 15/35 from three-point range and 29/36 at the foul line.
Joel Murray delivered another standout performance with 32 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and two steals on 10/18 shooting to go with 11/14 from the free-throw line.
