Four-time NBL champion Rhys Vague says he’s been welcomed home with open arms upon signing with the Cockburn Cougars for 2024.
The Cougars junior played 25 games in the SBL before starting his career with the Perth Wildcats, winning four championships with the storied club. He then signed in Japan and represented the Boomers on multiple occasions during the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
He returned to the NBL this past season with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, where he’s had a season-high of 12 points in NBL24.
In an interview with the Cougars, he said that this offseason he spent time back at home in Perth and couldn’t pass the opportunity to wear the blue and gold again.
“It’s something that I’ve sort of flirted with doing for a little while and then this past off-season I got lucky enough to spend a little bit of time back home in Perth, and Cockburn welcomed me back with open arms,” Vague told the Cougars.
“They let me workout down there at the courts every day and with some of their assistants as well who put me through some workouts. It brought back some old memories for me and then when Ty (CEO Tyrone Thwaites) reached out I felt like the timing was right once the NBL season is done.
“So I figured there was no place better than playing at Cockburn… It does feel like coming home.”
