Sapwell signs with Hobart Chargers

The Hobart Chargers have announced their latest recruit to the men’s team for the 2021 NBL1 South Season, with Koen Sapwell putting pen to paper.

The Hobart Chargers have announced their latest recruit to the men’s team for the 2021 NBL1 South Season, with Koen Sapwell putting pen to paper.

A 6’3 guard, Sapwell began his basketball journey in South Australia where he played his high school ball for Trinity College. Having represented SA Metro at Under 16’s and Under 18’s, he then made the move to the United States where he played three years of college basketball for Cal State Monterey Bay before returning to Australia.

Most recently, Sapwell has spent time working with the Cairns Taipans before making the move to Tasmania and will be suiting up for the Devonport Warriors in the 2021 NWBU competition as well.

Sapwell is also the son of three-time Adelaide 36ers NBL champion Rupert Sapwell.

“I played with his dad for a few years with the Taipans, it is a well-known family in the NBL,” coach Anthony Stewart said via The Hobart Mercury.

“He’s a great kid, I went up and watched him at the Ulverstone tournament on the weekend and very excited about what he will provide us.

“He’ll be able to stretch the floor for us, making other players better around him and I think that’s an important piece.”
