Sandringham Sabres (103) lost to Waverley Falcons (104)

Robbie Heath delivered his best NBL1 South performance to lead the Waverley Falcons to the 104-103 win over the Sandringham Sabres in a high-scoring thriller.

The Sabres played host to the Falcons at Southern Basketball Stadium looking for a third consecutive win having started the season losing six straight as they hosted a Waverley outfit looking to snap a three-match losing skid.

Waverley started the better for a 10-point lead in the opening quarter but by quarter-time Sandringham had done well to get back within juts four points.

The Sabres then put up 34 points to 29 in the second term in a high quality affair with both teams combining to shoot 8/11 from behind the three-point arc.

By half-time it was Sandringham with the narrowest of leads at 55-54 before it was 27 points to 25 in the third frame again for the Sabres with them holding on to the 82-79 lead by three quarter-time.

No more than three points separated the teams throughout the fourth term either and with Elliott Brown giving Sandringham the three-point lead with two minutes to play, Robbie Heath stepped up with a huge three-pointer to level scores up.

Malik Meunier then also scored going to the basket for the Falcons to put them up two and they would eventually win by a point when Malith Machar was only able to go 1/2 at the foul line for Sandringham.

Waverley's win improves them to a 4-4 record on the season as they avoided a fourth straight defeat on the back of shooting 48 per cent from the floor and going 13/29 from the land of plenty.

Robbie Heath has made the move from the Central Coast Crusaders last year in the NBL1 East to return to the South where he previously played with the Ringwood Hawks, and he delivered 30 points, five rebounds and five assists on 4/8 three-point shooting and 10/12 at the stripe for Waverley.

Malik Meunier also had 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Falcons, Mason Forbes 17 points and 11 boards, Madut Akec 22 points and four rebounds, and Bennie Lewis 12 points, three boards and three steals.

Sandringham are now 2-7 on the season as a result of the loss where they shot 52 per cent from the field but went just 6/23 from behind the three-point line.

Despite missing that late foul shot, Malith Machar finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Sabres with CJ Asuncion-Byrd adding 20 points and three steals, Tom Koppens 16 points and 11 rebounds, Elliott Brown 15 points and three boards, and Kaylan Kitto 11 points and three rebounds.
