'Special last few weeks': Will this devoted Tiger end his career on a high?

For more than a decade, Brad Simpson has held down a place in Burnie's starting five.  But Tuesday night's NWBU preliminary final could be his last appearance in the Tigers' black and yellow.  That is because the devoted Tiger has made the decision to retire from the game that he has played for close to 30 years.  "There are probably other priorities in life now," Simpson said of his decision.  "We're a family of three now, and while I'm still enjoying the basketball, it's probably time to help out people who have sacrificed time for me.  It's a feat he never thought possible, given the long-term injuries he experienced early in his career.  I can't thank [Burnie] enough; they stuck with me when I had my injuries at the start, and it was never a problem," he said.  "When you've been playing basketball for too long like I have - 30 years I think it's been - when you have serious injuries and you're out for a few months here or there, it's hard.  How could you ever pay that back? I don't think I've paid it back. For them to have faith in me has been great."

The Tigers' captain praised the club for its thriving junior program and reflected on some of the players he had called teammates over the years.  "I've been so fortunate to play with so many great players and future stars, what an experience," he said.  "I don't think they need to thank me for too much. I can say I've played with guys like Mason Bragg and Joe Chilcott, and then the young ones coming through, Jacob Furphy, Lachy Brewer, and there's more to come."  Simpson will be looking to end his NWBU career with a third premiership.

However, a tough preliminary final against Ulverstone awaits on Tuesday, June 3, at Devonport Stadium.  "This finals series is extremely tough to come from third and fourth. They're absolute coin flips, and we have two to go," he said.  "Vinny [DeAngelo] is a great player [for Ulverstone] - he's up there with some of the great imports.  Then it's probably the 45th time I've battled against Paul Campbell. My first game was against Paul, and it was his first game as well - one last time against one of my greatest competitors I've had in my career.  That will be special."

Tuesday night's men's match will tip off at 8.30pm.
The women's match between Burnie and Penguin will begin at 7pm. Brad
