The Nunawading Spectres men delivered two unforgettable performances across the ANZAC Round, clinching dramatic victories over both Melbourne and Eltham to level their season record at 3-3.
It all started Thursday night on ANZAC Eve, where the Spectres edged the Melbourne Tigers 77-76 in a heart-stopping finish. Melbourne missed a crucial free throw with just 0.8 seconds remaining, allowing Nunawading to escape with the win. Big man BJ Mack II was unstoppable, dropping 28 points and 12 rebounds to claim the ANZAC Medal. Jack Gandolfo added 16 points and 6 boards, while Cameron Cranston chipped in with 14 points.
Returning home on ANZAC Day, the Spectres fed off the home crowd and produced one of the games of the season, coming back from a 12-point deficit to defeat the reigning NBL1 South champions, Eltham, 95-91 in overtime.
Jack Gandolfo was clutch, draining a huge triple with 1.4 seconds left to momentarily lift Nunawading to victory, before Eltham forced overtime at the death. But it was all Spectres in the extra frame — Gandolfo hitting another big three and Joe Mutimer adding key buckets to seal the win.
Gandolfo led the scoring with 25 points (4/9 3PT), while Cameron Cranston posted a monster double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. BJ Mack II once again showed his class with 17 points and 15 rebounds, securing back-to-back ANZAC Medals across the round.
Christian D'Angelo (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Joe Mutimer (13 points, 7 assists) were also instrumental in the thrilling team effort.
With the back-to-back victories, the Spectres men have sent a loud message to the rest of the league — this is a group that won’t go away quietly. Grit, belief, and big-shot making are becoming the hallmarks of this 2025 squad.
