Joynes first played a handful of games for the Pioneers in 1989 before becoming a mainstay in 1996 following the conclusion of his professional career in the NBL with the Westside Melbourne Saints, Newcastle Falcons and Geelong Supercats. As the Club Captain In 1997, the Pioneers were South Conference runners-up and "Big J" led the league in field goal percentage, rebounding and was named All Star 5. His ten-year journey as a Pioneer led to winning the club's first ever Conference and National Championship in 2003. In that same year, Joynes was inducted as the club’s inaugural life member alongside Beth Serle.

Joynes retired from basketball, playing a total of 267 ABA and SEABL (now NBL1) games and held the Club record for games until 2022. It is undeniable that Joynes has been one of the most dominant players to play at the level of competition. To this day, Jason Joynes holds the club record for rebounding (2829 rebounds) and is third in blocked shots.

Joynes made an unbelievable impact on the community and local Basketball and has remained connected to the Club since the conclusion of his playing career. Following his playing days Jason served as a Board Member of the Pioneers for a period of two years between 2006 – 2008.
