Latest recruit Kon Anguik to bring power and versatility to both ends of the court this season as he joins the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants.

The guard comes to the west side from the NBL1 North competition in which he played for the Rockhampton Rockets.

Anguik stands at 195 cm and will complement the men’s side with his two-way style of play, saying his biggest asset is his ability to play both offense and defense strongly.

“My playstyle, I would say I am a big guard to wing. I want to play in transition – I think I will bring a lot of that to the team – pushing the ball,” he said.

“Defensively, I think can be very disruptive – I think that is where a lot of my strengths are and will mostly show this year with the Giants.

“I think I am an all-round game, I think I am going to be able to do most of my damage offensively on the opposite end.
“I am very excited to just get out there and get into it.”

The guard finished the 2022 NBL1 North season with 14.00ppg, 2.00apg and 7.50rpg.

Head coach Scott Manton said the “versatile guard and swingman will add versatility and athleticism” to his line-up.

“I've been very impressed in our conversations and Kon is looking forward to this opportunity in the Goldfields and meeting up with his team mates,” he said.

Originally from South Sudan, Anguik grew up in Queensland, playing basketball in high school before spending four years in the US to play college ball.

Anguik played in the NCAA DII, playing the 2016-17 season with the Regis University Rangers in Colorado, the 2017-18 season with the Sheridan College Generals, the 2018-19 season with the Coker University Cobras and his senior year for the Simpson University Red Hawks.

While completing a business degree, the student athlete was named to the South Atlantic Conference commissioner's honour roll and received the 2018-19 D2 Athletics Directors Association academic achievement award.

On his time spent playing in the US, he said he learned a lot over the four years.

“I definitely got a lot better, competition was pretty high there as well as it really helped my game and my competence,” he said.

“The play style I play now is from what I was learning playing over there.

“For my career in basketball, it has helped me get to this stage so it has helped a lot for me.”

On moving over to the NBL1 West conference, Anguik said he was looking for a “fresh start”.

“I thought, best for me to have a fresh start in a new conference where I don’t really know anybody on any teams there, so just the new challenge is probably the most important thing that has brought me to the west,” he said.

“So I can be somewhere where I am not at home and I can really put together a season I am proud of.”

Anguik is scheduled to arrive in Kalgoorlie mid-to-late February to join pre-season training ahead of the NBL1 West 2023 season.
