Hobart Chargers star Sharna Thompson says she will sign with the club that provides her the best chance to develop next NBL1 season.
Thompson had a breakout campaign with Hobart last season and has since earned a contract with the WNBL’s Townsville Fire.
The Tasmanian native loves playing in her home state but has told The Fast Break there is no guarantee she will be back in Hobart next NBL1 season.
“It’s definitely an option but I’m not going to close anything off,” Thompson said about returning to the Chargers.
“Playing for your hometown is definitely something special. It just depends on what happens.
“As we know there is a lot of things going on at the moment so whatever option comes up for me and what’s better to develop for me as well with the best opportunity, I’ll definitely take it.
“If that’s Hobart, that’s Hobart, if it’s somewhere else it’s just something I will need to consider.”
Thompson was one of the main beneficiaries from the added attention and exposure NBL1 placed on female athletes, something she took notice of.
“When the league went to NBL1, the league definitely got a lot stronger and there was a lot of positive things about it,” Thompson said.
“The broadcast of it, it was out there, everyone knew about it, which is good for individual players like me but as well for the teams, getting out there in the media and getting more spotlight. It was great.”
Thompson has been with her Fire teammates over the past couple of weeks as the club begins preseason training for the WNBL season.
With the campaign set to tip-off on November 12, Thompson says her transition into Townsville has been seamless.
“It was just so easy for me to come in,” she said.
“The girls were so welcoming and Shannon (Seebohm) has put a really good group of girls together.
“We are really young and we have got some veterans as well, so it is really exciting for what we are going to put on the court.”
