Willetton Tigers (85) defeated Lakeside Lightning (76)

The Willetton Tigers scored their first win of the season without Zitina Aokuso in the line-up bouncing back from a loss on Friday to beat the Lakeside Lightning 85-76 to celebrate the 250th game of captain Desiree Kelley.

Willetton went down on the road on Friday night to the Joondalup Wolves without the presence of Aokuso who had been averaging 22.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 8.3 assists in her four games which were all wins.

The Tigers then backed up on Saturday at home at Willetton Basketball Stadium where they were celebrating the 250-game milestone of championship winning captain Kelley that she reached the previous night at Joondalup.

They were taking on a Lakeside team who had strung together four straight wins on arrival too after losing their first three games of the 2025 season.

Willetton shook off the loss the previous evening for a monster first quarter with 31 points to 19 including knocking down seven three-pointers.

The lead for the Tigers got out to 13 points in the second quarter as well and they went into half-time on top 43-31.

Willetton maintained a double-figure advantage through most of the second half on the way to the eventual nine-point win to improve to a 5-2 record on the season.

The major differences in the game were Willetton going 21/31 at the foul line opposed to 11/15 while the Tigers forced the Lightning into 23 turnovers from which they were able to score 13 points from.

South West Slammers (87) lost to Joondalup Wolves (93)

Just 24 hours earlier and the Joondalup were yet to win in 2025 but now they have two wins to their name backing up the Friday home win by overpowering the South West Slammers in overtime to prevail 93-87.

Both teams came into the Saturday match up at Eaton Recreation Centre with one win to their names in 2025 with the victory for the Slammers coming in the opening around at home to the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Joondalup lost the first five games of the season but then broke through on their home court on Friday night against the Willetton Tigers ahead of the trip south to play the Slammers on Saturday.

The Wolfpack opened up an early nine-point lead but the Slammers finished the first quarter with 10 straight points to be leading 25-22 by quarter-time.

It was then just a 43-41 lead for South West going into the half-time break before the Slammers pushed themselves out to a six-point lead in the third term.

The Wolves responded by going on a 12-0 scoring run to open up their own seven-point lead early in the fourth stanza when Alecia Knowles knocked down a three ball.

The Slammers answered with the next seven points to level scores up once more and then the home team was leading by three following a triple from Alexis Donovan in the last 30 seconds.

Laniesha Paddon brought Joondalup back within a point and then ultimately she scored once again on the buzzer to save the Wolves from a shock loss and to send the game into overtime.

It was then all Joondalup in the extra five minutes and all the work was done at the foul line where they scored six of their eight points while the Slammers managed just the two points.

The Wolfpack scored the six-point win to improve to a 2-5 record as a result of the two wins in the space of 24 hours with Jorjah Smith knocking down 6/13 from three-point territory for 25 points and two assists.

Goldfields Giants (77) lost to Mandurah Magic (102)

Grace Berg and Claire Jacobs combined for 54 points as the Mandurah Magic put together an impressive display in Kalgoorlie to beat the Goldfields Giants 102-77.

The Giants were fresh off perhaps their best ever women's victory in the competition the previous week beating the Rockingham Flames by 54 points with Nici Gilday and Erin Antosh delivering dominant performances as imports.

Goldfields were home again on Saturday night at the newly redeveloped Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium looking to back up that performance against a Magic team trying to rebound from a loss to the Warwick Senators.

Mandurah were still without McKenna Dale and Ally Wilson but they started well away from home to be leading 24-19 by the end of the first quarter.

Both teams then scored 27 points each in the second period with the Giants shooting 12/17 from the field and the Magic going 10/21.

By half-time Mandurah were leading 51-46 but then the Magic completely dominated the second half with 26 points to 14 in the third quarter, and 25 to 17 in the fourth on the way to the eventual 25-point victory.

Mandurah ended up shooting 20/37 for the second half with 6/12 at three-point range while the Giants struggled going for 13/35 and knocking down just one shot from behind the three-point arc.

Grace Berg produced a tremendous showing for the Magic with 28 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals on 14/23 shooting.

Claire Jacobs added 26 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals with 8/8 shooting at the foul line while games record holding legend Casey Mihovilovich produced another 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in her 580th appearance.

Rockingham Flames (79) lost to Perth Redbacks (93)

After both teams were decimated just a week ago, they had plenty of troops back on Saturday night and with Anneli Maley and Natalie Chou combining for 57 points, the Perth Redbacks hit back to beat the Rockingham Flames 93-79.

There were plenty of stars missing for either team last week in their losses with the Redbacks going down to the Cockburn Cougars while the Flames were hammered by 54 points in Kalgoorlie by the Goldfields Giants.

The Redbacks were missing not only Maley and Chou, but captain Raya Thompson and vice-captain Geogia Denehey while the Flames were missing Shani Amos, Jess Jakens, Alex Ciabattoni and Alex Sharp for the trip to Kalgoorlie.

The Redbacks came out firing and put up 31 points in the first quarter to already lead by eight points at quarter-time before pushing that lead out to 16 in the second term.

Perth were leading 57-42 by half-time before retaining control of the contest throughout the second half leading by as much as 20 points and going on to score the 14-point victory at Mike Barnett Sports Complex.

The Redbacks might have only shot 38 per cent from the field opposed to the 44 from the Flames, but they took a monstrous 22 extra field goal attempts and nine more free throws on the back of 21 offensive rebounds and forcing Rockingham into 21 turnovers.

The Redbacks improve to a 4-2 record on the season with the win with Anneli Maley finishing with 31 points, 16 rebounds, five steals and three assists after returning from her time in training camp with the WNBA's LA Sparks.

Natalie Chou was also back to provide 26 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists with Georgia Denehey contributing 13 points, five boards and four assists, and Patty Brossmann 12 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

The championship defence of the Flames continues to fail to get off the ground with them now 1-5 for the season with Alex Ciabattoni finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Georgia Pineau also had 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocked shots, Sydney Erikstrup 12 points and eight boards, Jess Jakens 10 points and five rebounds, and 298-game point guard Shani Amos two points, seven boards and three assists.

Kalamunda Eastern Suns (79) lost to Cockburn Cougars (94)

It was the lone winless team taking on the only team yet to lose in 2025 and it followed the script with the Cockburn Cougars scoring the 94-79 victory against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Coming into the match up at Ray Owen Sports Centre and the Eastern Suns had lost their opening five matches by an average of 22.6 points up against the undefeated Cougars who had scored their first five victories at an average of 28.8 points.

The Suns had their work cut out to just make it a contest even on their home floor and that task seemed impossible by quarter-time with the Cougars having already put up 39 points on the back of shooting 17/27 from the field.

It was a 26-point lead for Cockburn already by quarter-time with the Cougars having scored 21 consecutive points before that lead grew to as much as 35 in the second term for the 63-30 lead.

The Eastern Suns were able to outscore the Cougars 49 points to 31 in the second half on the back of shooting 20/39 from the field while limiting Cockburn to shooting 12/37.

The result was never in jeopardy, though, with the Cougars cruising to the 15-point victory to improve to a perfect 6-0 record having played in each of the past two grand finals.

Daniel Raber has come into this NBL1 season on the back of playing in the WNBL at Geelong United and she put up 30 points, 14 rebounds, five steals and two assists for Cockburn on 13/19 shooting.

Jewel Williams added 21 points, six rebounds and three assists, Steph Gorman 15 points, five steals, four assists and three boards, Sarah Mortensen 10 points, 10 rebounds and two steals, and Ruby Porter nine points, three boards, three steals and two assists.

The Suns have lost their first six matches of the season with Karly Murphy doing a power of work to finish with 30 points, 21 rebounds and four steals on 12/23 shooting.

Olivia Berry added 18 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Alyssa Bowen 11 points, four boards and four assists.

MEN

Geraldton Buccaneers (89) lost to East Perth Eagles (92)

The East Perth Eagles unveiled gun signing Jonah Antonio and repeated their dose from last year by scoring a stirring 92-89 win in Geraldton against the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers had been in good form wining both games at home so far in 2025 and splitting their four road matches to date ahead of hosting the struggling Eagles at Active West Stadium on Saturday night.

East Perth arrived fresh off a 36-point loss at home last Friday night to the Warwick Senators but they did receive a significant boost to their line-up with the addition of NBL sharpshooter Jonah Antonio.

While he is a Warwick Senators junior, there's a natural connection with him having played at the Cairns Taipans under East Perth championship winning coach so he has joined the Eagles as a replacement for injured captain Taylor Young.

He was into the line-up for the clash with the Buccaneers and right from the outset it was a different looking Eagles team desperate for a second win of the season.

East Perth knocked down four threes in the first quarter with Max Rice getting going and they were leading 23-17 by quarter-time.

The Buccs fired back in the second term holding the Eagles to 1/11 three-point shooting and keeping them to just 13 points while scoring 21 themselves to take a narrow 38-36 lead into half-time.

The scoring picked up for both teams in the third quarter with the Buccaneers putting up 28 points to 25 from the Eagles with the home team leading 66-61 by three quarter-time.

Geraldton were then leading by nine early in the fourth quarter after four quick points before Rice knocked down back-to-back threes for East Perth. Matthew Lang then soon scored five quick points but the Buccs did have a degree of control still leading by seven when Nik DeSantis hit from deep.

But Rice knocked down another three soon after to keep the Eagles within three and in the end it was Lang with the go ahead basket with two minutes to play.

Lee Roberts extended the lead to three, then four soon after and ultimately both Antonio and Rice stepped up to make clutch free throws for the eventual three-point win.

Last year East Perth won in Geraldton for the first time since 2014 and that set up a finals return in 2024, and now repeating the dose is what they hope will kickstart their season at 2-4.

Jonah Antonio's numbers of seven points, five assists and two rebounds might not suggest a huge impact, but his defensive intensity and cool head with ball in hands was hugely important for the Eagles in the win.

Max Rice shot 7/15 from downtown on his way to 31 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals with Lee Roberts adding 16 points, nine boards and five assists, Chier Maker 14 points and five rebounds, and Matthew Lang 12 points, six boards and four assists.

It's a first home loss of the season for Geraldton who are now 4-3 on the season with Verle Williams top-scoring with 20 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Joshua Keyes had a hot start and finished with 19 points and five rebounds while Akeem Springs had a slow start but still ended up with 16 points and six rebounds.

Johny Narkle also had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, Liam Hunt nine points, four boards, three assists and two steals, and captain Aaron Ralph landed another three to now be just 11 shy of the all-time mark currently held by Ryan Neill.

Willetton Tigers (107) defeated Lakeside Lightning (73)

The Willetton Tigers brought the momentum from their thrilling Friday night win to dominate the Lakeside Lightning on Saturday for the 107-73 home victory.

Willetton scored a stirring 105-101 win on Friday night on the road to the Wolfpack ahead of returning home to Willetton Basketball Stadium to host the Lightning on Saturday.

Lakeside did come into the game off a win too against the South West Slammers, but not only were they still without Rowan Mackenzie but also import big AJ Wilson didn't suit up to play.

Lakeside did well to stick with Willetton to only trail by a point at quarter-time despite the home team making 5/8 from downtown in that opening 10 minutes.

The Tigers then shot 12/19 from the floor in the second quarter while piling on another 32 points and holding the Lightning to 17 to see Willetton go into the half-time break leading 56-40.

Willetton had gone on a 16-0 run in that second quarter to blow the game wide open and they went on with the job in the second half with the lead getting out to 34 by the final buzzer.

The Tigers improve to a 5-2 record on the season after the two wins this weekend with Taeshon Cherry top-scoring with 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals on 7/13 shooting from the floor and 8/12 from the foul line.

Fellow import Tyreese Davis added 17 points, six assists and four rebounds with Tom Musumeci contributing 14 points and three steals, Tom Gerovich nine points, five rebounds and four assists, Andrew Black eight points and three boards, and Luke Paul eight points and four assists.

South West Slammers (94) lost to Joondalup Wolves (97)

The Joondalup Wolves played in their second thriller in the space of 24 hours and fired back from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to keep the South West Slammers with the 97-94 overtime road win.

The Wolfpack suffered a loss at home the previous night in a high quality affair to the Willetton Tigers ahead of making the trip south to face the winless Slammers at Eaton Recreation Centre.

The Slammers had pushed the Perry Lakes Hawks and Lakeside Lightning in their last two games so were knocking on the door of that elusive first win of 2025.

The home team started well too to open up an eight-point lead in the first quarter but that advantage was back to just two by quarter-time.

The Slammers were feeling good, though, and scored nine consecutive to open up an 11-point advantage and on the back of that they went into half-time leading 47-37 even while shooting 4/17 from three-point range for the half.

The Wolves weren’t doing much better going 5/16 but the Slammers got off eight more shot attempts helping them to the double-figure lead.

Joondalup did fire back in the third quarter outscoring South West 24 points to 14 while knocking down 3/4 from downtown and that saw scores all tied up heading into the third.

However, the Slammers made their move going on a 10-0 scoring run to open up a 12-point lead when Calvin Whipple scored with just over four minutes to play.

That first win of the season was within touching distance but the Wolfpack had other ideas starting with consecutive three balls to Caleb Davis and Joey Baker.

CJ Turnage then scored the next five points too to make it a one-point game with just under a minute left before Jamal Poplar was able to make one free-throw to put the Slammers two points up.

The Wolves had one last play to either try to force overtime or go for the winner coming out of a timeout and Turnage proved unstoppable down in the block and scored at the rim to tie scores up with Joondalup closing regulation outscoring the Slammers 13 points to one in the last four minutes.

Then in extra time, things remained within a basket either way until Turnage pushed the Wolves out to a four-point lead with 1:30 to play and they never surrendered the lead again with Gabe Chadinha and new import Adili Kuerban sealing the win at the foul line.

Caleb Davis ended up top-scoring with 22 points, four rebounds and four assists for Joondalup with 5/7 three-point shooting while CJ Turnage added 21 points, 13 boards, three assists and two blocks.

Joey Baker had 20 points, four rebounds and two steals, Gabe Chadinha 11 points on 2/3 three-point shooting, and Damon Ballantyne 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.

The Wolves will also be hoping a late knee injury to point guard Ethan Elliott doesn’t keep him sidelined for long, if at all.

Despite the loss, there was a lot to like in what the Slammers did despite now being 0-7 with Jamal Poplar finishing with 29 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Devan Craig added 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, Clive Weeden 11 points, three rebounds and three assists, Calvin Whipple nine points and four boards, and Pharell Keats eight points, five steals, four assists and two rebounds.

The Magic arrived at Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium looking to bounce back from a last up loss to the Warwick Senators while the Giants were also fresh off their first loss of the season at the hands of the Rockingham Flames.

It was a fast start from the defending champions on the road with the Magic putting up 22 points to 12 in the first quarter and Mandurah were able to complete a 16-0 scoring run into the second term.

The lead got out to as much 16 points for the Magic too in the second quarter and by half-time they were still leading 50-37 on the back of shooting 19/39 from the field opposed to 14/41.

That ensured Mandurah maintained a comfortable advantage on the way to the eventual nine-point victory to improve to 5-2 on their season as defending champions.

Julian Pesava continued his stunning start to the season with the Magic coming off last year's championship with another 37 points, 10 assists and six rebounds on 12/19 shooting from the floor, 5/11 from behind the arc and 8/8 at the stripe.

Rockingham Flames (102) defeated Perth Redbacks (78)

The Rockingham Flames made it five straight wins and retained the annual Anthony Exeter Cup with another commanding performance to beat the Perth Redbacks 102-78.

The Flames were back home at Mike Barnett Sports Complex in hot form on a four-game winning streak as they played host a Redbacks team fresh off losing a third straight game in overtime against the Cockburn Cougars last week.

Rockingham knocked down six three-pointers in the first quarter on the way to 30 points, but the Redbacks did well to stick with them with 26 points of their own.

It was a pace the Flames were able to maintain, though, and they put up another 30 points in the second period to open up a 16-point lead and to still be on top 60-46 going into the half-time break.

The lead for Rockingham had got out to 24 by the final buzzer thanks to 27 points to 15 in the final quarter as they make it five straight wins to improve to 7-1 on the season and retain the Anthony Exeter Cup named in honour of the former league MVP who played at both clubs.

Kalamunda Eastern Suns (82) defeated Cockburn Cougars (79)

The Cockburn Cougars missed a golden chance to make it consecutive wins with the Kalamunda Eastern Suns storming home from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit for the thrilling 82-79 home victory.

The Cougars scored their first win of the season the previous week with the overtime win against the Perth Redbacks as they arrived at Ray Owen Sports Centre taking on an Eastern Suns team on a four-game losing slide.

Scores were all level at 19-19 by quarter-time with the Suns going 8/22 from the field to 5/13 but the Cougars got up the only eight free-throw attempts of the first 10 minutes.

Kalamunda then put up 21 points to 16 in the second term to go into half-time leading 40-35 before the lead for the Suns got out to eight points before the Cougars made their move.

Cockburn ended up scoring 35 points in the third quarter while knocking down 6/12 fro three-point territory with Chan Nai doing the majority of the damage as the Cougars turned an eight-point deficit into a 70-59 advantage by three quarter-time.

That lead for Cockburn grew to 14 points early in the fourth quarter as well but Kalamunda fired back with an 11-0 run and ended up hitting the lead with two minutes to play with a pair of free throws to Marshall Nelson.

A perfectly run out of bounds play that led to a Nathan Pond dunk to beat the shot clock briefly restored the Cougars to the lead, but it wouldn’t last with free throws from Nelson and Travis Fee securing the win in the end for the Suns.

Cockburn still had 0.6 seconds left out of a timeout to try and come up with a prayer to force overtime but they couldn’t even get up a shot in the end with the Suns pulling off the great escape to snap the four-game losing run and improve to 3-5 on the season.
