Cockburn Cougars (103) defeated Goldfields Giants (60)

The undefeated Cockburn Cougars continued their ominous form proving too strong for the Goldfields Giants who were without Nici Gilday going on to score the 103-60 home victory.

Both teams had already played earlier in the weekend with the Cougars beating the second placed Warwick Senators back on Friday night by six points at Warwick Stadium to maintain their perfect record so far in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Giants arrived for their double-header away from Kalgoorlie without star guard Gilday who had been suspended for this week's games coming out of an incident late in last Saturday night's game against the Mandurah Magic.

That meant the Giants had to try and cover the 22.8 points, 7.8 assists and 5.7 rebounds that she is averaging so far this season and they started the road double with a 29-point loss at the hands of the Willetton Tigers.

It didn't take the Cougars long to take control of the contest and they had 29 points to nine in the opening quarter on the back of knocking down 6/13 from behind the three-point line opposed to the 0/6 for the Giants.

That lead only continued to grow throughout the match up in favour of the Cougars and it got out to as much as 27 points in the second quarter, to 34 in the third and as much as 43 in the fourth.

Cockburn ended up securing the 43-point victory on the back of knocking down 17/49 from three-point range opposed to the 3/20 for the Giants with the Cougars taking a monstrous 35 extra field goal attempts overall.

That included Steph Gorman landing 6/12 from three-point territory, Ruby Porter 3/6, Sarah Mortensen 2/5 and Lily Gammidge 2/7.

The Cougars now sit on a perfect 8-0 record for the season on the back of playing in the last two grand finals with Mortensen ending the game with 27 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Gorman also delivered 24 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, Porter 15 points, four boards and three steals, Daniel Raber 12 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks, and Reece Anticevic eight points, four boards and four steals in just her third NBL1 appearance.

The Giants slip to 2-6 for the season with Kate Sidebottom fighting hard for 17 points and eight rebounds with new import Erin Antosh adding 17 points and nine boards, and 215-game veteran Rachel Pettit eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Cockburn Cougars (80) lost to Goldfields Giants (86)

The big four of the Goldfields Giants again stood tall to deliver them a second win of the weekend on the road beating the Cockburn Cougars 86-80.

The two teams were playing their second game of the weekend with the Cougars putting in a fighting performance but losing to the undefeated Warwick Senators by 22 points on Friday night at Warwick Stadium.

The Giants came into the weekend having lost their past two games at home in Kalgoorlie against the Mandurah Magic and Rockingham Flames but got back to winning on Saturday night defeating the Willetton Tigers by 11 points.

That set up Sunday's match up at Wally Hagan Stadium with Goldfields opening up a 10-point advantage during the first term and still being up 23-17 by quarter-time.

It was then another 27 points to 22 in the second term in favour of the Giants as they went into half-time leading 50-39 on shooting 18/36 from the field opposed to the 16/40 from the Cougars.

Goldfields were able to maintain a double-figure lead for much of the second half but the Cougars did keep on fighting and even got back within four points in the final minute when Chan Nai knocked down a three-pointer.

De'Sean Parsons knocked down two free throws to push the Giants back out six but the Cougars weren’t giving up and Terrandus Smith knocked down a three that would have cut the deficit in half and kept things interesting.

The only problem was he stepped out of bounds while taking the shot so Goldfields got possession back and with a six-point lead were able to dribble it out to make it a double win weekend on the road.

There wasn’t a whole lot different in the shooting of the two teams but the Giants went 22/25 at the foul line opposed to just 5/11 for the Cougars.

Goldfields improves to a 6-2 record on the season with the pair of wins and it was their four big guns who all stepped up again to ensure the victory.

Shaun Stewart finished with 24 points, four rebounds and two assists on 11/11 foul shooting De'Sean Parsons adding 18 points, 13 boards and five assists, Michael Jok 16 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Joshua Duach 16 points and four rebounds.

The Cougars remain with one win for the season to be in second bottom spot with a 1-8 record with import point guard back this weekend and putting up 21 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Fellow import Terrandus Smith added 14 points, six boards, three assists and two steals, Nathan Pond 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and Harrison Fitzgerald 11 points on 3/3 shooting from downtown.
